the splotches are brown and i believe slightly brittle. the leaves with the brown spots are also a lighter yellow color, the rest of the plant is generally green and healthy. Some leaves have orange spots, which may be the prelude to the brown spots.

except for the tips of most leaves are brittle brown and curling up. which i believe is a sign of over-nutes so i've been watering it w/o nutrients past 2 weeks, but these brittle brown spots have come up a lot in the past week or two

You could be locking out a lot of stuff with a pH of over 7. I can't tell much from the pics, sorry.

When I was growing the way you are, my policy was: "When in doubt, flush it out." In soil, your pH range should be 6.3 - 6.8. To flush, you need three times as much water as the size of the pot... 1 gal pot / 3 gals water, etc. Get the water in the right pH range and flush the soil thoroughly. Don't do anything for a few days and see how your new growth looks. Also, it is very important to buffer the pH of your fert solution before adding it to soil. Most ferts will drop the pH significantly. You need to start with unbuffered water (de-clorinated tap, for example), then add ferts, then buffer to the right range.

I hope that helps. :peace:
