New Grower Help identify potential attacker?

Hey guys,

Hopefully this is the right place for this question? (apologies and please redirect me if its not)

I'm growing outdoors in pots, and I came across these two straw sized/shaped holes in my soil. Does anyone know what kind of bug would leave this as their signature?




I'm a little concerned, as my last two plants didn't make it past the seedling stage; it appeared they died from some kind of pest eating / sucking at the stem just below the soil, where they eventually collapsed and withered. I chalked it up to bad luck and the nature of growing outdoors, but when I saw these holes today it reminded me of seeing something similar in my last pot where the seedling didn't make it. If it helps at all, both times the holes were found the morning after rainfall.

Hopefully somebody has an idea as to what it might be, and if they are found to be bad news, tips on what I can do about it?

You mention soil, are you using garden soil?

If so do you have roly poly's? They are small multi legged millipede type insects. They hide in the garden soil and come to the surface and feed on seedling stems.
Most of time they are not seen on the surface.

Hey dingo, thanks for the response man.

The soil is an organic mix based upon a guide from here on AFN. The pot is in the garden though, I have big ass palms in my yard so I need to be able to move the plants around to maximise the sun. Did a search of what you described, I'll keep an eye on her & see if I spot anything like that.

I asked my mate who is pretty into his gardening & he said not to sweat it too much, it could obviously be a fair variety of things. I'm just being a little overly cautious as to avoid a repeat of my last seedling - and figured hey if anyone recognises it then the more info the better huh.

one thing you can do to increase your chances of success with out door plants, is to start them off inside under a small light, A small t5 fixture would work. Veg them for about 2 weeks indoor then move them outside. THey will be bigger and stronger, and will have a better chance of survival.
