Live Stoner Chat HEY HEY everyone! Newbie auto-grower here..Got any advice for a gal??

Welcome to the family, ladybudz! :tiphat:
I'm with Son of Hobbes all the way, wg's easy dirt is a great recipe for success. Simple, not too hot, and very forgiving. I'm on my second grow now, and while some things have changed, the soil remains the same. Brilliant stuff!

"AFN smoke out" Welcome to the family...:pighug:

You all are so nice and inviting on here! I am so happy I have everyone on this site to share my experience with. So I went to my local grow shop and she really helped me get things in order on equipment I will need for my set up. Very friendly and I am sure Ill be going to her for soil/nutrients/etc. however I am finding most of my supplies online for a lot cheaper and the quality definitely seems to be there. So I put an order together and below is what I plan on ordering...If anyone has an opinion on these items or thinks I may need other items right away please let me know...Ill probably place my order later tonight. I just want to have my essentials set up and ready for when the girls arrive...

This is what I have on my list to be ordered so far:

* Mylar Grow tent 36''x36''x72'' (I am planning for 6 plants)
*Apollo 400W Watt HPS MH Grow light Dimmable Ballast w/ducting
*iPower 6'' Carbon Filter and Inline Fan Combo w/duct&clamps
*Indoor Humidity Monitor
*Eco tester for Ph

Welcome to the AFN family, heady, so glad that you have joined us.

Here are my only recommendations concerning your order, because I had to learn the hard way, and I would hate to have someone else go through it.

iPower 6'' Carbon Filter and Inline Fan Combo
I bought the 4" inch model of this brand, it did not take long for the bearings to start making a LOT of noise in it. It still works but is noisy as all get out. I have since bought 3 Hydrafarm (Amazon) fans. 4,6, and 8" all work excellent. Little extra money, but well worth it. Also, you did not list it, but you may also want to consider getting a speed controller for your fan. Easier to fine tune just how much air needs to be drawn out of your grow area. It is amazing how much air a 6" fan moves. I never have had to use my fans turned up all the way.

Also, you did not list, and maybe you already have them, but you will also want a couple of small fans inside your tent to blow air on your plants.

Looking forward to watching your grow!

Peace.

Ah interesting..thanks for the info about the iPower fans..I really am not trying to have extra noise at all...I just checked out the hydrafarm line...Do you know if theres any options with inline fan and carbon filter all together? I am trying to make this set up as easy as I can (just me doing this) so the kits that come with everything are something I am definitely looking for..

I don't believe there is, but not positive. I'm sure you can purchase the iPower carbon filters separately, and it would be no harder to put that on the Hydrfarm fan, as it would be with any 'kit'. You have to install both to to the fan either way you go, but it is very simple to do.

We are always here to help in anyway we can. That is what AFN is all about, helping and learning from each other.

Cheers.

Alright so I just went ahead and purchased a Hurricane intake fan and a Phresh filter from local shop..With the size of my tent, I think 4'' will suffice so I went ahead and went with that size for the two. A little pricier than original set up but quality seems to be there.. I have yet to buy a speed controller for the fan but I plan on doing that before this gets underway. I measured height of my room and the original tent I wanted would probably be pushing it with height. Now I am looking at going with Earth Worth brand 32''x32''x63'' mylar grow tent.. It has more good reviews than bad..Main issue being that some light may get out.. Wanting to know if that's really a huge issue?!?! Any thoughts anyone?

I just went with it..Got my tent and lighting on the way..fan/filter here and ready to go for when the other things arrive..after I get all of this up and together, I will go from there on remaining items I need. Ahh this is so exciting.

Hey heady, I thought that a 4" fan would be sufficient to draw enough heat out of my 4' x 4' x 60' tent using an 8 bulb T5 HO florescent light fixture. It was not near large enough to pull anywhere near enough heat out of my tent, even with the many passive vent openings, and large zippered openings on both sides for access. I finally had to keep the door open while the lights were on, pretty much defeating the purpose.
I am sure you already know this, but MH/HPS lighting puts out far more heat than florescent lights. That is a top notch fan and filter that you purchased, but I would by all means upgrade to the 6" fan/filter. I would hate to see you use the 4", and find out that it is not large enough, and have to buy a 6" set up in addition. I am sure you can exchange the 4" at your local grow shop before you use it. That is just my opinion coming from personal experience.

If security, i.e. light leaking out, is not an issue then you should be fine.

Ahh this is so exciting.
Just wait until you start growing and taste the fruits of your labor. You will become so addicted to growing, I am quite sure :)

Peace.

A 4" fan IS sufficient IF you have a air cooled hood for your light.
I run a 400wt hps with 2, 4' 4bulb T5 fixtures one on each side of the walls in my 3'x4'x6 room
I use a can filter that is hung from the ceiling.
when it is really hot in the summer I have to shut the bottom 2 bulbs off in the T5 fixtures.
I will upgrade to a 6" fan someday.
But a 4" will work. I have been running this for 3 years.
