High ph won't move

Update day 31

2nd dose of al sulph. Dissolved 5gms AS, 1ml Grow and 1ml calmag in 1l tap water, ph was not tested. Run off came back at ph 4.2.

Plants overall colouring is much healthier though still some slight yellowing and small for her age at 11 inches.

Will update after next ph'ed feeding for the results of the Al Sulph dosing

I can see some lighter green between the veins on the bigger leaves which could possibly be a lack of iron. With the high pH you had iron is locked out. Let's see where the pH ends up after the second dose of AS.

At 31 days I would expect your vertical growth to be slowing and will likely stop soon, so they aren't going to get much bigger. Problems such as you've had can stunt the plants, which appears to be the case with your plants. I've had plants like that myself and they are still capable of giving a descent yield.

Hey Muddy,

The poor thing has had a rough time, she's doing well to be alive so I'll take stunted hands down :) Any yield from this grow will be a bonus but it's been an invaluable learning experience. I'll try and be gentle with her on the run in and we'll see what happens.

I see the yellowing on the leaves but even that is a huge improvement and if anything it seems stable, the larger fan leaves, the worst affected, yellowed and died so I removed them. Also, she didn't really get a regular feeding schedule due to flushing and fighting the ph. Onwards and upwards though and we'll see what happens over the rest of the grow.

Muddy, your help and advice is, as always, greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Glad to help. Can't tell you how many autos I stunted or screwed up when I first started growing them about 6-7 years ago. Back then there was virtually no information available. I like your approach and I expect that each of your successive grows will only get better and better.

I dare say I may stunt one or two more before the end but with resourses like AFN we can't fail to improve...all the support for noobs here really is invaluable, hats off to all the staff and mods for the job they do!! :tiphat:

Even with all the trauma during this grow, I'm still loving it and even though there's a bit to do yet, I must admit, I already have half an eye on grow #2.

Have a good weekend my friend

Update Day 33

First feed after dosing with AS again. 2 ml Grow, 1ml Top Max and 1ml Calmag in 1l water ph 6.0. I lowered the ph of the feed as I thought the soil ph would still be on the high side. Run off ph came back at 6.2, a big drop since the last run.

Vertical growth seems to have stopped and can see an increase in flower production, will start to introduce Bloom nutes on the next feed, will also take feed ph back up to 6.5

Looks like you've got the pH in line now. Excellent!

Ahhh, now credit where credit is due Muddy, I couldn't have done it without your help and guidance :thank:

It was really good to see the ph come down, the trick now is to keep it there for the rest of the grow...my next learning curve lol!!

I thank you once again for all your help and appreciate the rep my friend.

Cheers

You're very welcome. If you can, invest in a good soil probe like the Control Wizard Accurate 8, about $50 off the internet. That will allow you to test your soil directly instead of measuring the run off. It's more accurate and will allow you to check your soil pH on a regular basis. I've found that when using AS, the pH will drop when you feed/water them, then slowly rise back up as the soil dries out. When I was using Pro Mix with a starting pH of 7 I found that 4 grams of 17% AS per gallon of soil mix would lower the starting pH to about 6.2 when feeding at 6.5. It would slowly rise to about 6.6, then drop back down with the next watering. Cycling through that range can be beneficial as not all nutrients are best absorbed at a given pH reading.

Hey Muddy, believe it or not, I dropped my ph pen this morning and broke the probe :slaps: so it looks like an Accurate 8 will be winging its way to me imminently!!

I intend to grow in soil for the foreseeable future. What I found this time, as a new grower, testing the run off became very confusing, feed at 6.5, feed at 6.0, flush and all results coming back at 7.2, the calculations didn't make any sense, therefore I didn't know what my actual soil ph was, just knew it was too high. To be able to test the soil directly, for me, will be a blessing (though I don't intend to be in that position again!!)

Allowing the ph to drift also makes perfect sense, 6.5 is a very fine line and almost impossible to maintain exactly throughout a grow. Maintaining a healthy balance either side of that line will be my next project.

To the future my friend :Sharing One:
