How do you test soil pH?

First off is it critical to check during an organic grow even starting with quality soil and water within range?

If so then what is a good pH test product? I already have a pH meter for liquids.

I'm leaning towards trying my first "water only" grow using Roots Organic Original as my base and trying both Kind Soil and in other pots trying the Mephisto Super Soil.

This is the standard...

Do NOT get one of the cheaper soil probes especially the ones with two parallel prongs.
They will give you inaccurate readings that then have you responding to issues that don't exist
thereby generating or compounding issues rather than solving anything.

You always want to check soil right out of the bag. Quality control issues (like those present with Fox Farms soils)
can lead to toxically acidic soils (like in the 4's) being sold.
