New Grower How important is the smell?

i think its the moisture thats killing the smell. even skilled growers grow impatient at the drying process! gotta wait till they are quite dry at hanging before bags or jars. i think its kind of like when the growing buds look ready but if you wait an extra week or two more often than not they'll actually be ready

Yeah man, I dry mine in open air until the stems are almost able to snap. Still a little moist, than jar them with the Caliber III and try to keep them @ 60RH. Anything 70 or above I open and let air for 30 minutes or so.
I'm developing some strains that don't smell for the fact that its still not legal a lot of places. Not only are they very short but also oderless. They can be grown indoors or out and smoked all without drawing unwanted attention. I thinks that's one of the reasons autos exist. The high without the heat...I agree that it is great to smell some dank bud but as long as I get really high I don't care how it smells.
Also as already stated a longer cure can help bring out the smell better.

Thought I'd share how I dry and cure... I've always used this rack to dry:

Though it states mini its PLENTY BIG! Takes up about 2/3 of my closet up....
Than once the bud snaps (the sound and feel with out actually to the point of snapping)
I than put in mason jar with a calliber 3 and to me a VERY VERY USEFUL product to ensure perfect curing each time...

Throw one in a jar and burp several times daily (if in jar initially above 70% RH I pull out of jars and put back on rack for about 12-24hrs. Than back in jar... I keep up this process till the jar reaches below 65%... Than I only burp once ever 3 to 5 days... Buds are perfectly cured if I could leave in jars long enough...

When I'm about ready to harvest my bubblelicious it is sticky and Dank !
After 2 days of drying all that dissapears and smells like hay . After a few weeks in jars alittle sweetness comes back , but thats about it .
The potency however is insane..One hit and I'm good for hours..So I guess the smell thing does'nt bother me to much .I do find it odd all the sticky dankness goes away though..

I didn't read the second page of comments...but I completely understand what you mean.
I've grown some dank here but because of the often humid weather I prefer to quick dry mine in paper above the light for about 2 days until it's lost most of its moisture...then stick it in a big jar with a litte rice at the bottom and then seperated into layers between news paper cuttings.
BUT...the quick dry really does take a lot of the instant smell away that people look for.
Especially here in China...most people don't have a clue and just have the one smell and appearence they know and trust. If your's doesn't look and smell like that, they think it's weaker. I've proven that belief wrong many a time, with a lot of the really strong smelling bud often not being as potent as what I've filled their bowls with.
Smell to me is nice if you have a special strain...(I recently really enjoyed Biodiesel Mass' peppery sourness) but...anyone who relies on it to tell dank from reg is missing out.

That is really cool because I do not like so much smoking it "water cured"....
