Hello all, and thanks for helping out us new growers. I certainly qualify, since I’ve never grown anything but garden veggies and I usually left those to my wife to do. :-)

I am interested in really small yields - I don’t smoke that much/often, and I don’t have any intention of selling anything. I live in a state where it will be legal to grow in a few months, but it turns out that I live within 1000 feet of a school so it’s still illegal for ME to grow. :-( So I have to do it at a friend’s house; he has kindly allowed me to use his basement in exchange for a bit of herb now and then. Like me, he doesn’t smoke a great deal either so I think this arrangement will work. But it does mean that the plants are not where I can watch them 24/7although it is pretty close to my house.

Anyway, I have a couple of questions (of course).

First of all, there’s the whole issue of what to grow. I don’t like the really strong THC stuff I’ve tried at all. I started smoking in 1967 and the stuff we had then was so different from a lot of what is available now - I don’t know where to start. (BTW, I spent a long time not smoking and didn’t really get interested in it again until our state passed its legalization law last month, which kind of explains why I’m such a blank about the more recent crops. I had some Grapefruit Diesel from a dispensary which I HATED - I was zonked 12 hours later and it was pretty unpleasant. So I’d like to find something that is autoflowering (to remove the whole “Oops, I turned on a light” problem since it’s going to be in someone else’s basement), preferably with feminized seeds, and also something that doesn’t get too big. I had thought about Barney’s Seeds Tangelo Rapido (CBD doesn’t bother me at all - I actually like it, but my favorite stone is the kind that makes me think and do things - I HATE being zonked and incapable of moving. Tangelo Rapido is supposed to be a fairly low THC/high CBD strain compared to the Grapefruit Diesel I referred to.) I had some Northern Lights from the same dispensary which was much lower in THC (and much higher in CBD) and I liked it a lot more.

Does anyone have any recs for an autoflowering strain that doesn’t get real big (I don’t mind small yield) and produces more of an energetic high than a couch-locked one? Like I said, so far I have not liked the really potent stuff I’ve tried at all.

i have my light - it’s a Mailliard T5, 2 foot, 8 tube, and I have a good stand system for it that makes adjusting it a snap. The room is heated in the winter (I’ve been checking the temp and it is always between 70 - 75 during the day since the furnace is in the basement), cool in the summer, and if necessary we can vent to the outside via a fan/carbon filter, but since I have never done this before...Question #2: how much of an odor problem do you really have if you only have one or two small plants?

I am planning on starting really simple, growing in dirt and I’m not going to use a tent, at least not at first. I will be using simple white reflectors (I’m a professional photographer and this is something I think I know a bit about) to bounce light back to the plants from the sides and still allow air circulation to the plants. This setup can be infinitely adjusted as the plants mature and for now I’m not locked in to anything except the light, which is why I’m attracted to doing it this way. I know I will make mistakes and I’d prefer that they not cost me too much money, and I can’t afford to waste it. Just like the rest of you. :-)

I guess that’s enough to go on for now. I’ll see if anybody has any suggestions before I ask more questions and attempt to reinvent the wheel. :-) But next time I won't put them in the Introduction forum, LOL.

Thanks!

Hello C-

The strain you mentioned that you liked, the N.Lights, is a very good Hybrid which has the creative benefits of an indica, and the uplifting benefit of a Sativa. I believe it is like a 60/40 Indica/Sativa, it was good for you you say, so keep that in mind when you want to pick your strain.

If you check on some of the earlier auto generation, you will see smaller, and with higher CBD's plants.

Short Stuff has a few. Joint Dr.'s Low Rider's don't get to big. Also Road Runner, but I have no experience with that one.

Q#2, odor is pretty much strain specific. However, most folks find out that there is more odor than they anticipated.

The NLights you menitioned is said to have a peculiar odor that is not too strong. Some say is doesn't even smell like cannabis. But I have not grown that one out before.

Maybe we can get some more input from other's.

Also I know there are seed Co.'s that are selling High CBD strains where you will only get medicated and Not High.

Just my two cents my friend.

Howdy Chanvremec...:styles rasta:to AFN!

I had the same problem you describe, about having low tolerance after not partaking of cannabis for years.
I called myself "Two Toke Tilly"...but after a few months (and now) smoking gives me a more normal feeling.
You could try edibles or tinctures...you get a different effect when you ingest cannabis.

Enjoy!:smokeit:

Eekman and Root, thanks for the responses. Sometimes I wonder about all the strains for the simple reason that two bunches of Northern Lights (for example) from two different dispensaries can have vastly different TCH and CBD content. Maybe the strain isn't as important as what happens to it, I guess that's what I'm trying to say. When you read the seed companies' PR on these things they all sound like the answer to all of life's problems, LOL.

I would be curious if anybody else has any input on strains to look for, given my desires (auto, low yield ok, no couch lock, smaller size preferred) and I'd also like to ask again about just how much odor you get from a small plant or two. Sorry about the ignorance, but the only grow room I've even been in was a commercial one and the world was so radically different from anything that relates to my situation that hardly anything applied.:dunno:

Hya Chany,

Welcome to AFN. As root pointed out, cooking or baking gives a very good creative high.
I wrote "Angels" for Robbie Williams after a canna cookie. And that didn't turn out too bad.
I am however, a compulsive liar.

Again, welcome friend. eP.

True, but edibles aren't much for instant gratification. It takes me forever to finally feel that I've had too much. :-)

I think what you prefer is the more sativa strains, more in your head than in your body. Not nearly the couch lock, veg out you get with the Indica strains. Yes, only a couple plants can stink the place up pretty good. Even a carbon filter is ineffective without a tent.

Welcome to AFN, chan! Hope all is well. Plant size depends alot on pot size. You can grow big strains in small pots and keep em small with a bit of training.

Heavily Medicated, I meant fan/filter for the air going out of the house. If I do go to a tent I will vent it the same way since there is an easy way to do that where we want to put the plant/s. I agree with you about the Sativa aspect, although I have been told by one commercial grower that that is nonsense and that everything depends on how the strain is bred as well as grown. I don't know enough to disagree with any credibility so I have to at least consider the point of view. Certainly, the stereotype of Sativa/Indica would agree with you. I probably just need to try more strains out. On problem I face is that anything I can actually try is unlikely to be available an an autoflower, so I have to try to interpret the generalizations the companies make without having a good backround to work from. Well, I expect it to be fun!

Briman, your words are music to my ears; I was planning to do just that, at least to the extent I can pull it off.

Thanks for chiming in!
