Lighting HPS vs LED light question

Hi, everyone. I have a 3 x 3 grow tent which I was planning on using a 400 watt hps with, however heat is a concern. I have read that LED ballasts will give off considerably less heat.

Can anyone tell me what the equivalent of a 400 watt hps would be, in LED form? From what I understand the wattages are a bit different.

Either the 250w or 265w here is the equivalent and is ideal for your space, I'm just about to pre order the 265w and I have a 2x4

400 watts of HPS or 400 watts of LEDs produce the same amount of heat in an enclosed space. 400 watts is 400 watts period. HPS is less efficient at producing photons in the PPFD (plant use) range and more in the IR (heat) range. The advantage to LEDs is you can get an equal amount of light Umoles/watt with less wattage than with HPS therefore less heat in the tent.

@Misanthrope82 If your in the USA check out @BigSm0 at the cobshop.net and his autocobs. They are only 55w each and are equivalent to 150w hps.

Correct! But there are dozens of leds that are less efficient than hps. That’s the kicker.

I jest. The tech changes so rapidly. After I built my light I stopped following closely. I am not sure I am up on the latest. So I didn't go there.

I apologize, it’s just something I can’t bear to stay quiet about regardless of the trouble it gets me into.

Quality brands of hps actually give off more light watt for watt and the same amount of heat as some leds out there. For example a company takes a 200 watt light and claim it’s capable of beating a much more powerful hps like a 600w. If the leds used aren’t as efficient as the hps which most aren’t it’s not going to. They do experience less heat because of the lower wattage. This is all part of the marketing bs going on for ages. This is also why I say led’s In general have ruined the indoor growing market. False claims and inflated wattage multipliers in inefficiency.

A 200w led thats 20% efficient
A 200w hps that’s 20% efficient
Both give the same amount of light and heat.

The only way to create more light is by being more efficient. More light from the wattage.

Yes the is a lot of crap out there when it comes to LED grow lights. Buyer beware! It is a shame that there are so many scam artists out there.

LEDs are pretty much like everything in life: there are some out there that are fantastic and some are crap.

They try to get you with the whole "equivelant" bit. So they advertise a light as a "600 watt LED" but go on to plainly say "it draws only 300 actual watts." They are saying their light is "equivelant to.." whatever wattage HID. And often they'll use different metrics to measure both to make the equivelancy seem sound enough, when that may not be the case at all! Caveat Emptor!

I'm not at disparaging LED's, please don't get me wrong! There are some absolutely fantastic ones out there! I actually just switched to LED and am very pleased with it.
