Obviously, this will be my first build.

Plan as of right now is 3 Gen 7 Vero 29s@3000k, on an HLG-240H-C2100. So it'll run up to 245W, at which point it should (according to datasheets) still be pumping out 140 lm/w. With pin-fin heatsinks. Seems like best bang for the buck right now - up to ~1300 ppfd in a 60x60(2x2) tent for ~200$ (less if shipping is cheaper to where you live).

Also, it seems like there's not much talk about DLI (daily light input) around here, even though that seems like autoflowers' biggest advantage. Basically, it's ppfd over time. I actually thought about it this week before realizing that this measurement already exists - was arguing with a friend who said auto genetics are dumb. What makes autoflowers genuinely exciting and possibly straight up 'better' than photoperiods (with the same thc potential) is how much more light they can take over the same time. The 1000 ppfd minimum "rule" was written with 12hr photoperiod in mind; changing it to 18-24 is obviously a significant increase in amount of actual light synthesized by the plant.

Formula for DLI is (60minutes*60seconds*no. of light hours*ppfd)/1 million. Theoretically, a good DLI is ~65 (12 hours@1500 ppfd). You can get that with 750 PPFD@24hrs; a supposedly bottom end 1000 PPFD light at 20hrs will give you 72 DLI, or better than recommended. My planned light has a theoretical maximum of ~93@20hr.

Whoowee love the info. To be honest I haven't done much with these calculations of dli,ppf or ppfd I basically went off of the recommended heights and specs of proven lights and used them as my own gauge. Them of coarse the plants responses from experience. I am also very interested in the vero build since I have very little knowledge in their chips. That said, since I don't know much I can't offer much help but you have a very interested viewer.

currently waiting on a response from kingbrite on pricing, will probably have the lights in about a week after i receive seeds, so maybe 2-3 weeks from today (hopefully).

i've always liked what i've seen of the veros because they seem to handle high currents better than their competitors, and these gen 7s just seem sweet as fuck (from the datasheets), especially when you consider they're 25$ and seem to be on par with the 1818, it seems. i've seen people claim they like the bridgelux spectrum better but who knows. either way, i'd have gone for citizen cobs but they're extra expensive around here.

as far as the idea of dli, i think what's important - and this is especially true for the auto/photo argument - is that more hours of the same light mean more light, period. 250w of hps for an auto is more than 250w of hps for a photoperiodic plant.

also, @bigsmo it seems like you've done the kind of research (i.e, actual experience) that i lack. i'm trying to think of a way of setting this up where i would have it on rails, but would have the option of tilting or even seperating the two external cobs and using them as spots. any advice?

Well I think I'll follow along cob's just weren't close to ready when I was researching my lights. Now I see lots, time to learn[emoji4]
They are still getting better and better as time goes along too.

@BigSm0 are those individually tiltable?

i think i'll do a pretty 'standard' l profile bar with 3 cobs+the driver and just leave enough slack to where i can disconnect and individually hang the two outer lights pretty easily.

just got the price quote. the veros are 22.5$ from kingbrite, before shipping. they recommend going up to 163 mm pin fin heatsinks for cobs driven hard, which i guess is smart but drives up both shipping and the cost of individual cobs. it's probably worth the extra 50$ though, and it means i can use them for whatever i upgrade to.
