But are the netpots supposed to be so small? I had imagen they would have been bigger...

A 3" or 4" net pot is plenty big enough. The majority ~ 99% of the roots will be down in the reservoir.

Use the grodan starter blocks for the hydro. be careful not to squeeze or dent them. Is there a top feed mechanism?
