You will most likely want a fan speed controller too.
I don't know how far you need to vent etc.., but you could just buy a 6 inch fan at Walmart for $12 and wrap a piece of cardboard around it to make a tube and use that to vent. They move a decent amount of air. I think the main reason we need vortex fans is because they don't lose power as we add resistance to them (Carbon filter).
This is how I run my intake. Very simple, stays in place due to the cardboard and costs very little.

I hope I may ask a few more questions about these fans.

1. How long have you guys had your fans?
2. Are they being used with a fan controller?
3. How loud is motor and the air flowing out of them?
4. Are they easy to install and operate?

Thanks again for the information and recommendation guys!

1. A year
2. Yes, one of them is.
3. The air rush is louder than the fan. Acoustic/insulated duct is better than a box like this

Although I say how quiet it is I made a box for each and found the duct made the most difference. If the fan is hanging in the tent then the duct is a must.

Have this 'dimmer' on 75% and doesn't really make it any quieter.
And it interfears with any FM/MW radios in the area.

Thanks guys for the information. They are a bit above the budget range, but I will definitely look more into them.

I prefer to stay away from Craigslist. I usually use amazon for most of my purchases, but occasionally I would use ebay if I must.

Ebay has lots of them. Budgetwise, you can get one for $50-$60 USD. if You'll need some duct for it, that will be another $15-$20. For odor control, you can use Uno if its a mild odor. I'vr managed to get thru my grow that way. I use it outside my grow area and in my living room. I just put a small AMount in a cap off of a jar in a couple places out of sight. I've used less than 1/2 a jar so it was worth the price. it might get you by until you can afford a filter.

Light dimmers are NOT what you want to use with a fan motor! They make speed controls for them that are not resistance based. They are however more expensive than a "light dimmer"

Its not a light dimer, I just didn't know what to call it so I said dimmer.

Should have said 'fan speed controler' that's why it has a temperature gauge with it. You can stick the probe in the tent if needed.

Sorry about that, chopped my OrangeBud not long back and dare say its knocking me on my arsed each joint. And now smoking loads less than I was as a result.....more babbling can be posted if needed

Thank you guys very much for your personal information about your grow equipment. :tiphat:

I am going to look around and see which ones are on sale, and go with the lowest cost.

I think I might look around for a muffler as well, only so that way it does not bother other people in the house with the noise.

Sounds like your setting up for a sub par setup. Youll yield sub par results. Save your pesos dude. Buy quality... Anything below a 4 inch exhaust with a scrubber, speed control and forced air induction is SUB PAR. Why grow in the first place. We learn to fly before we set foot in a cockpit, your attempting to grow without equipment. Your going to cause a fire with a cheap setup. Growing should be respected. Don't take it the wrong way, but its like me going into a fine wine store and saying I want to make fine wine. But I onlys gots 100 bucks.

Don't take it the wrong way, ive been known to speak my mind on afn. But ill speak up when safety is of an actual concern.

I paid $450AUD for my phresh variable speed silenced 200mm, and $220AUD on the carbon filter to suit. $60 for the insulated duct work.

Its probably not necessary to spend a fortune like i did but yeah when you go into a store looking for the cheapest possible option, you'll be back again later.

Oh lordy no, they sky is falling!

So, scare tactics aside there is some gear you can do on the cheap, and it won't burn down your house. I've built cabinets using used computer axial fans and carbon filters made out of rubbermaid containers. Still works like a charm all these years later and last time I checked my house hadn't burned down. I could be wrong about that, but I am sitting in it right now so I'm going with no.

Many people with small tents or grow spaces have bought bathroom fans and used those just fine. As a matter of fact, all of this fancy grow gear we have (and I love mine, don't get me wrong) Is relatively new. A decade ago and for all time before that people made a lot of their own gear and improvised a lot of setups. Wiring is not that difficult if done correctly.

So let's not holler about they sky falling and demand people spend lots of money on a grow. Not everyone has the funds for the expensive stuff.

Amen, Piggy. It's completely against the AFN vibe to tell someone not to grow unless they're going to pay top dollar for everything. There are plenty of other sites where people can get talked down to because they're not flush with cash and sporting a cutting edge setup. This is not one of them. I've done all sorts of DIY stuff over the years for my small scale grows, and there is nothing to be concerned about if you are smart about it. Telling someone that a $50 fan from a reputable manufacturer will burn their house down but a $200 fan won't is just silly and there's no factual basis for it. Use common sense with your electrics & keep them dry and wired up correctly and you'll be fine. I've been on and off AFN for close to 4 years and I have never seen anyone burn their house down in all the hundreds of grows I've followed along with.

Now there's something to be said for investing in good equipment up front if you can, as it will save you money in the long run. But a lot of folks here are just trying to dip their toe into the water of growing and ditch the dealer, not produce big yields. Starting small and working your way up is a completely valid way of growing, especially with autoflowers. And I've found that over time I am usually able to repurpose my old stuff as I upgrade to bigger and better things (convert old tent/cab to drying space, use old fans for a cool tube, etc.). Honestly I think that working up from a basic setup is better for a lot of people anyway, and I have seen plenty of grows were people start out dropping a grand or two and don't have the skills to get the most from their investment. This can lead to even more frustration than someone who cut a few corners and doesn't have top notch gear to start out with.
