Straight into the ground is good because the soil will not dry out so fast. however you have no control over what the soil is like so the best way round this would be to dig holes and fill it with compost.
i prefer to plant into large 20L buckets because these are cheap compared to plant pots. in the uk £1 each. drilling out the bottoms turns them into a easily moveable large pot
if you do this mix in some water retaining gels to help you later on when they need allot of water.
my recommendation is you stash a water-but or 2 somewhere near your spot and let them fill up or each time you visit take 10-20L of water and fill it up each time. unless your close to a natural water source .
i found in the UK slugs and snails to be my biggest problem early on. i lost 10/30 seedlings to slugs first time round. since then ive declared war on them and covered my area in pellets. ( dont put them in the pots with the plants) i made that mistake and they dissolved into the soil , the plants twisted every which way and i thought it fucked them for good. luckily i flushed them out by mid veg
