Good morning everyone-
While awaiting a response here, I also posted on the AFN 24 hour sub forum. What a GREAT resource!
Waira responded:
Hi Bayes- had a look at your thread,...good soil blend, good nute's (but I don't think they're that hot,...compared to something like the Sea Grow line,..), pH is great.... to my eye, that even, overall yellowing, right down to the veins, w/o spotting or brown tips/margins, on lower fans, is classic N defc.,... she must be building up buds big time, to suddenly start sucking up the fans like that! Easy fix though, give her a round of grow fert's, start at 1/2 strength, and see how she responds... it'll take a couple days, but it should at least halt the yellowing... don't worry about grow nutes once or twice at this stage, it won't cause any funny business! Also, some yellowing is normal, but it's way to early in budding for them to be getting tapped this hard....
I'm going to follow his advice.
However, despite my last ph runoff results (drops), I suspect the soil ph is lower than I thought. I'm beginning to think that soil runoff testing can be all over the map depending on how the plant is watered (fast vs slow) and the type of pot (holes only on the bottom versus holes going up the sides.) My thinking here is that if you don't get enough runoff, like 20% or so, and if your pot has holes up the side, and you don't take your time watering, you (me) may not be getting very accurate readings. This is probably particularly true if one is relying on subjective color assessment (drops).
In the future starting today, I'm going to pay much more attention to the water/nutrient ph and less on runoff ph.
This AM I mixed up a gallon with 1tsp Grow Big with 1/2 tsp Tiger Bloom and took a ph measurement. Tap water was a little north of 7, after nutes it dropped to about 5.5-6.0. The magnitude of the drop was very surprising. I then added 1/4tsp of baking soda to bring it back up to about 6.5. I'm going to let it sit for a few hours, test again, then feed.
Not that I have an informed opinion, but my guess is that Waira is right. I think the rinse washed out the already depleted nute levels caused by early, aggressive bud formation.
There MAY BE a lesson here. Feeding schedules are important but they should not be followed slavishly. They are guidelines ONLY and if your plants are running way ahead (or behind) of typical/expected growth patterns, just my opinion, but it may be wiser to feed based on the plant's condition and stage of development as opposed to a generalized feeding schedule.
And yes, she is building big buds, big time.
Thanks for visting. Any and all comments are greatly appreciated, as always.
