Lighting Led vs hps, nahhhhhhh led with hps :-)

I have a few questions and want some advice please.

I grow with just leds. I have a Blackstar chrome 6 spot, 1 Grow Northern ms0006, 2 Helios pro2's and a Blackstar 240w which a mate will be borrowing soon.

I'm reasonably pleased with the results I have been having. Cropped over 10oz from 6 fast bud#2's in 6.5 litre pots which is much better for me. Just moving out of the learning stage. Now I have a bit of experience I have decided to have a look at combining led with hps.

I have 3 drobes now, just finished my new one :-)

My options are limitless now.

One of the things that made me think of combining hps with led, is I think they are both excellent ways of giving the plants light they need, so instead of led vs hps, led with hps...

I have an area 1.6 metres high, 90cm wide and 50cm deep. I want to put the Blackstar chrome 270 right at the top, and run a hps light in there. Each plant will be grown in a 20/30 litre air pot, and have a drobe to herself, 1 auto flower germinated every 28 days. It will start in my new drobe, go for 28 days, then move to the drobe with the gn + 2 helios sidelights, then have 28 days finishing under the chrome and hps. With just the chrome running temps are way too low! Got the blackstar 240 in there and temps are good, but could be lowered. Fans are hardly working anywhere near their potential.

The good thing about this drobe, is there is already a 6'' TT150 extractor fan right at the top sucking air through the 6'' carbon filter and out. Plus a 6'' TT150 intake fan. Both fans have a fan controller too. I can pump some serious air through this space, my place werrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr's like fuck, all day long because of the fans, so I just blank it out with music. If I had to turn the fans up it really wouldn't make much difference. Also have the intake 6'' from an open window.

I'm not keen on air cool tubes. I will remove the hps when I grow in the summer, so don't want permanent holes cut through sides of my drobe.

I have already ruled out a 400w. I'm thinking either 150w hps or 250w hps.

Does anybody use led + hps? Or just hps in a drobe?

It cannot get too hot as I grow in a conservatory, so just a piece of winow, wood and mylar between me and the helicopters.

Just how hot is a 250w hps in a reflector?

Maybe I have missed something, or you have ideas. Please let me know anyway. I have never used mh or hps before. Just Cfl's then leds.

Thanks in advance...

Hi Stealthy :)

Just how hot is a 250w hps in a reflector?
In my experience - in a 60cm x 60cm x 180cm wardrobe a 250w HPS gets about 15f higher than ambient room temperature.

I swapped to LED which runs at room temperature (no real increase with good extraction)

That's not too bad really then. I can extract heat straight outside, when I set it up. Also pull cold air straight back in at the same time. Just want to have a run with hps. Got 3 drobes, so imagine the gn ms0006 + a 250 hps for 1 plant for the last 4 weeks of it's life cycle :-)

Ohh - 1 sec stealthy - when i say 15f above ambient temp - i mean at the plant tops when the light is "the right" height
I should point out a 250w HPS gets terrifically hot and under no circumstances should you touch the bulb lol - it's stupid hot!

The GN you will be able to touch with no concerns :)

For the love of god man!!!! will just add 4 at a time then. Sorry, I'm an idiot! Lol
