Lighting Led vs hps, nahhhhhhh led with hps :-)

Depends on the size and temps of your space. In most situations peple mount them outside, but either will work. They do get warm though, and will add a degree or two if they are in your cab

I don't have cooltubes and I keep everything in my closet. I have an 8" fan/duct running outside and drawing in air from the house. Temps can get up to 90f at the top but no higher then 85 at canopy level. The cool air get sucked from the bottom to the duct at the top then vents back down through my floor. It is working well but I think I'll have to put an ac in the room outside the closet during summer months.

Have you used a 6" before? How does the 8" compare, especially in terms of noise? Thinking of going to 8" when I re-build my next setup when I move in since I'm converting my setup to vertical I won't need the 6" for my tubes anymore.. How loud does it run, and what CFM does that sucker have?

It's a bit noisy but no worse then running a big fan. I have had people in my house and nobody noticed it or asked about the noise. I do shut it off when my landlord comes over just to be safe though. If I remember correctly the fan is 420CFM. I remember doing the math and it fills the closet with new air about every 30 seconds.

I have made my purchase of my first hps kit, though I did buy a ballast and bulb together and a separate hood from another shop.


Bit extra, but I think it looks great. I can run leds beside it too, probably the 2 Helios pro2's, 1 either side for balanced coverage.


Area is 90cm x 50cm. Reflector is 42cm x 42cm x13cm. Gone with the Lumatek 250w super lumens dimmable, and my reflector is the Mini Isis.


That would mean, one of the other drobe's would have the chrome 6 spot, and the gn ms0006, also 90cm x 50cm x 1.6m area. I think the chrome + gn would be awesome together in a drobe for 1 plant too. Exciting times combining hps + led!

Please, any tips on how I should use this, please fire away. What distance from the canopy would you start with and work towards. I'm 100% confident I have ample ventilation, 6'' tt150 x 2, plus a big tower fan. I can buy another fan and aim it at the hps if necessary.


I'm not going to be using a timer, I like to go manually. Lol Do I need anything else other than reflector, ballast and the hps bulb? Thanks

Used the hps for 5 weeks and sold it. Absolutely rubbish compared with leds! What a load of crap, 1970's lighting. Growing with led's really is a luxury! I removed the 250hps, + a 55w intake fan that I needed coz of temps. Replaced it with a Budmaster 450xg, that with a passive intake only draws the same as the hps + intake. It's amazing compared to the hps. I had the hps at the right height 'n' everything, just rubbish compared to leds. Least I no longer wonder, also got a fair chunk back for it when I shifted it. LOL I have a chrome 270, a gn ms006, budmaster 450xg, 2 Helios pro2's + a Blackstar 240. All showed much better growth and plant health than hps. Maybe a 400w is good, I don't know, haven't used that. The 250 is rubbish! Either way I'm done with that little hps punt. Leds, and just leds all the way for me!

I was hoping to see things work better for u man! I'm running a 250w by itself and wanted to run two LEDs on each side of it in my 4x4x7 tent once I can get settled into my new place. I actually was just reading a grow weed easy email i get every Sunday that mentioned the use of led and hps to enhace the terpene profiles.

Grow under LED grow lights (Indoors)

There are growers that believe that the color spectrum being produced in certain modern LED grow lights can also add to the complexity of terpene content, similar to what happens with plants grown under the sun.

This may explain why some growers believe that indoor plants that are supplemented with LED grow lights have a better quality than ones grown just under a standard HPS light.

For example, I’ve noticed it’s becoming increasingly popular to supplement HPS grow lights with one or two LED panels during the flowering stage.

A few growers have made that claim that�*growing with�*a mix of both HPS and LED grow lights during the flowering stage can help imitate the complexity of terpenes found in buds grown under the sun. There have also been some informal tests by growers which indicate that using a mix of LEDs and HPS together also increases the trichome production and�*smell of cannabis buds.

Many growers believe that outdoor-grown or greenhouse-grown bud has a better taste and smell, and it's possible for indoor growers to capture some of that by using HPS�*and�*LED grow lights together in the budding phase of growth, especially during the last few weeks before harvest when terpene production is ramping up.

It's just Not for me. Hps is proven, but I prefer leds. I reckon it's a good idea to compliment hps with leds to improve the spectrum, But Not adding hps when you already use leds! Also found I had the leds too close, so the reflector didn't block the led light. So, both leds were not in the correct range. But for using 300w, I would take a Budmaster 450 instead of a 250 hps + intake fan, any day of the week. If I was to do it all over again, I would get the 400w hps kit, no reflector, and hang the led panels at the top. Let the plants grow up to them, only adjusting the hps height when needed. But I seriously doubt I will do it again. I have seen an led grow with a 90w panel that got 1.3 grams dry. Over 4 ounces with a 90w led. Hps is out dated and being phased out imo. Many will disagree, but who can get between 4-5 oz per plant in soil with a 90w hps? I haven't seen that personally, it may have happened...? I use small grow areas, this is how I feel about it for my needs only. Growers with bigger areas that use 600w/1000w hps may not agree, but I'm saying leds are easily good enough to compete. They were Not a just few years ago. They are now in the transitional period of becoming better than hps, not just competing with hps. Many skilled hps growers have switched to led only and are getting awesome results. Also love the stress free factor with temps and not burning plants etc. Leds are much safer than hps too.
