Just a quick lighthearted thread. Have you ever met a famous person or persons? What were they like ?

For a starter, I once met Lemmy from Motorhead, backstage after a concert at the Wolverhampton Civic back in about 1982.

Gawd he was a bore, kept saying

"Wherever you been, I've been. And I'm back!"

Couldn't wait to leave. Mind you, they all smoked a lot of dope!

I've met a few famous musicians over the years. Brownie McGee, James Cotton, Nile Rogers, John Paul Jones, Chrissie Hynde, Bob Geldof and a couple others I can't recall at the moment. I met Rogers, Jones, Hynde and Geldof at a press conference at the Hard Rock in NYC announcing the release of the Live Aid book, which I had some involvement with. Rogers, Jones and Geldof were all very friendly and willing to give a minute of their time. Hynde was rather standoffish, which at first I took as snobbery but later realized was just shyness. I also met a couple well known NYC deejays at the same event. Scott Muny, who was red faced drunk at 2 p.m., and Vince Scelsa, who was just as warm and friendly as his radio persona. Both Brownie McGee and James Cotton were very down to earth and friendly.

I also met actor Peter O'Toole at Wolf's Deli in NYC, just a hand shake and a hello. I also got to say hello to Count Basie when I ran into him in the hall between sets at a concert his band was giving at a local high school. I've also had the opportunity to have brief chats with some lesser known jazz musicians such as Alan Vache, Warren Vache Sr., Ken Peplowski, Glenn Zatola, and Chris Griffin.

My best "famous meeting" was in Vancouver, BC, in 1992. I was attending a software school for the week, and the company took us out for the first night's wine and dine at Forte's Rib House. We had just sat down (10 of us) when the waiter leans in to me and says "don't look now, but Jimmy Page just walked in!" Page and a couple of unidentified rocker looking blokes sidled up to a corner raw bar.. My table mates were daring me to go over to him, so I figured "This is my chance to say hello to a Legend" and I walked over to them.
I tapped Jimmy on the shoulder, and introduced myself. He was instantly kind! Asked if I wanted a drink.. Then he introduces me to Rob Fraser, his engineer- handshake/hello... THEN, he says "And, this is David. We started his record today." And then, this complete rock star leans over and shakes my hand heartily, and says "David Coverdale. Great to meet you David!" A couple minutes of small talk about "the record" (Coverdale/Page from 1993), and I excuse myself. Once back at the table, I was heralded as the most badass in the bunch lolol
Later that night, on Granville Street, Jimmy and company are walking up the crowded sidewalk, people parting and amazed to see Jimmy Page.. And Jimmy looks up at me and says "Hey David, hows it going mate!?" and another 5 minute chat happens...
I was pinching myself for a month! And, I managed not to go all fan crazy. Yeah :)

I've only met two celebrities: Too Tall Jones & Tommy Chong. Both were very nice and accommodating.

I once bumped into ePenguin from AFN whilst having lunch at the Ritz. I strode over to shake his flipper and compliment him, but his "Minder" broke my nose and told me to "Feck off"

What a twat! Never meet your hero's.

* I am very very stoned.

sorry. eP.

I met Howard Marks AKA Mr Nice the dope dealer at a London train station.
He'd been doing one of his gigs in London where he stands up talking about all the importing and drama's he got up to.

By pure chance I'd been at this gig and got chucked out for smoking.
Please forgive me Mr Nice, I was young and drunk and silly
I had a quick chat, he was very nice, Nice by name nice by nature..

A cop came out in the street and put a road block right in front of my car in NYC and we got into an argument. I wanted to cut through before whatever was about to happen and he wouldn't let me go. A limo pulled over and a little black man got out and I couldn't understand a word he said, but he wanted us to stop arguing

The next day I found out it was Nelson Mandela :)
