sorry for the re-post I didnt know how to erase the one I just did in the wrong section :stoneslap:
Well While Im waiting for my other room to clear out Ive decided to go ahead and start my "Germinator" grow that I mentioned in my other grow blog..

So I have been gathering info on AUTOFLOWER-SPECIFIC growing tips, and one of the biggest things I come across is container size... MOSTLY that it is more important to have a tall rather then a wider pot to grow in... THIS IS SOMEWHAT COUNTER INTUITIVE TO NORMAL PHOTO-PERIOD ADVICE, but for whatever reason autoflowers roots act differently, and they prefer a deeper pot. I kept reading about how the bigger the pot the better, and this is true.. BUT TO WHAT EXTENT???

Well Ive decided to try n help answer this question for myself, and the AFN community... For genetics, I have chosen Barney's Farm Malana Bomb Auto
bf_malana-bomb-_auto_.jpg
... well actually it was recommended to me by someone as a big producing, good smoking autoflower...

WTF is that you ask? LOL Well it used to be a 21 gallon/80L trash can from your local hardware store(1st picture). I then took my dremmel tool with a cutting disk attached and cut out 4 slots up and down the sides. This is to serve 2 purposes: first to allow more air flow into the soil/root area, and secondly so I could physically view the moisture level in the middle and lower levels of the pot. I have moisture meter for the top of it, and it NORMALLY reaches all the way down, but when using large, deep planting pots, it sometimes gets hard to judge the soil moisture especially when using a new pot size/setup

For medium, Im trying a NEW MIX also for testing purposes and autoflower specific growing... I have started off with canna bio-terra plus orgainc soiless mix... It says on the label that it is made with the finest grade humus, spagnam and peat moss, as well as having ALL ORGANIC NUTRIENTS pre-mixed into it such as bat and lizard guano, rock phosphate, lime, humic & fulvic acids etc etc.. Into this mix I have also added some slow-release organic granular feed pictured here... It has beneficial root zone fungi/microbes called mychorrizae(?) in the mixture as well as the organic nutrients, AND FOR US LED GROWERS CAL/MAG!!! It says it will last for about 3 weeks before another flowering feed is needed.. HOWEVER when reading the bio-terra plus from Canna, they talk about because they have already included some organic nutrients in the soiless mix that you dont really need to feed. or if you do feed it your own nutrients, it wont use the nutrients already in the soil. BASICALLY what their saying is that if you give it fast acting nutrients to pair with the slower acting nutrients the roots will take what they want, when they want rather then you dictating their diet to them. This is MOSTLY TRUE.... So I figure that by adding the slow release organic nutrients in when I made the soiless mix I was basically giving the plants all the nutrients and micro nutrients etc etc it will need for 8 weeks give or take a few days... My theory being that the plant will use the organic nutrient supplement I added first as its in a more readily available form, and as the grow progresses, the beneficials will start breaking down the other slow release organic nutrients Canna added and feed itself with this entirely throughthe flowering!

I SINCERELY HOPE THIS WORKS AS WELL AS I EXPECT IT TO... This soiless mix was SO EASY to make, so easy to find the organic ingredients I added to it, and Canna usually provides quality products, so im expecting good things from this mix... Because autoflowers like a drier soil, I have also supplemented perlite into the mix for quicker drying in my large container, and to make the soil dry...

High!

SOunds like a hit, bro!
"Munch..munch..munch will be watching :smokebuds:
What will be be your lighting?

All the best and :karma Cloud:

Peace!

To what extent? hahahahahahahahah I salute your efforts sir and hope you'll post loads of pics. Will definitely be cool to see this grow out.

Lights you ask??? well I hung 3 x Growthstar PowerBloom Plus 8 LED panels, with custom 7 spectrum including UVB & IR for increased trich count and higher cannabinoid percentages. Nice idea her! One suggestion since there is so much soil in the trash can. You might want to look into the plant warrior cones that go into the bottom of the buckets for increased airflow and oxygen to the root system. Cause the center of all that soil is gonna stay wet. I have even seen some people grow in 55 gallon trash cans and put 3/4" pvc pipe throughout the soil with a shit load of hole drilled into it all the way to the bottom to allow some air down oxygen to get down I the center.

You got a nice room! You should do a detailed LED report for those light in the LED section. Always looking for I for nd specs on any kind of led lighting. Can't wait to see how it turns out bro! Best of luck and Im pulling up a chair to watch the grass grow!

Ive been reading into a few methods such as air cones, super root pots etc etc, but the stores around here are crap for hydroponic specific stuff, hence a lot of fabrication on my part or using off label LOL. I DO AGREE with you about the soil staying moist SOMEWHAT

I would like to temper that part of the response with this advice(not to you specifically)... EVERYONE when they start to become advanced, higher level growers should be learning, have learned already, or starting to get into your plants moisture needs, as things like Osmotic pressures etc etc can REALLY screw up a good feeding routine/soil mix. Now what I mean by knowing your plants moisture needs is AKIN to reading the leaves to decide when to feed or how heavy to feed based on what the leaves are telling you.. except it has to do with knowing your plants root system, and more specifically what it needs, and how it operates throughout its many stages of growth with particular notice being paid attention to moisture content of the root zone.:smokeit:

Ok, to be more specific..... A given plant, in a given setup, with its given phenotypic expression will use a certain amount of moisture in a certain span of time... theres no better way; if you like to space out your waterings so be it, if your like me, and you run a super dry soiless mix, youll like to feed every 3rd day perhaps...MOST books will tell or advise you to use pots with holes in the bottom and/or sides of the pot to allow for overflow when feeding.. I MOSTLY agree with this, especially if your skills are not up to a medium level at least. However, NO-ONE wants to waste water, or especially nutrients if you can help it! The fact is though that most, if not most a LOT of experienced growers dont need holes in their pots! This is because we ALL KNOW OR HAVE SEEN the effects of over/under watering.. and SHOULD BY NOW BE FAMILIAR WITH EXACTLY WHAT YOUR PLANT NEEDS TO GIVE IT ITS BEST ENVIRONMENT... (I WILL SAY DEPENDING ON SETUP & STRAIN, ITS SOMETIMES BETTER TO POUR A 10% OVERFLOW TO PREVENT SALT BUILDUP)(I WILL EXPLAIN THAT POINT LATER CAUSE I SEE PEOPLE ABOUT TO SLAP ME)... what Im saying is that we know how much water our plants are using when running 100%, so we simply on give them enough to maintain proper moisture levels throughout.

For instance... in MY SETUP, using a 5 gallon home depot bucket that has no drainage holes with 4.5 gallons of pro-mix HP... and running my lights 24/7 (veg cycle) it uses 2L of nutrient solution mix/water EVERY 3 DAYS... I know this as I frequently use a moisture meter for soil and monitor it just in case.. but thats cause Im a bit paranoid about losing a crop

Now while im personally not one of those people that care about "wasting" a little bit of nutrient solution or RO water, not everyone is that way so if you can learn to feed without runoff your not wasting as much if at all!

As I was saying, for my setup, my plants use a .5 to 1.0 gallons or (2-4 liters)... So in order to maintain PEAK moisture levels in my plants soils, I have to give my plants 2L every third day..
I have a moisture meter on top of that, and before I water/feed them i ALWAYS check it first... 9 times out of 10 though its 2L every third day for me in a 5 gallon bucket

THAT BEING SAID... I FULLY RECOMMEND THAT 8/10 GROWERS SHOULD USE POTS WITH DRAINAGE HOLES UNTIL THEY CONSIDER THEMSELVES AN EXPERT...

The reasons I cut the 4 big slots out from the sides of the trash can was to HOPEFULLY combat this issue of soil not draining properly... and for this grow, I have amended the soiless mix with an additional 50% of perlite.. making the end product somewhere around the range of 50% perlite, 50% Canna bio-terra plus

my point about pouring for a 10-15% overflow is simple... MANY people say you HAVE to flush your soil in between feedings, or at least once a month etc to prevent salt buildup which causes nutrient lock among other things... This is simply not true.. When your feeding your pants, if you dont care about wasting a little bit of nutes, simply feed a 10% overflow EVERY FEEDING!

Ive NEVER had salt buildup or lockout once in my growing life... I chalk it up to the fact that because im having runnoff on every feeding, the old salts dont get a chance to build-up

On a huge container though thats just too wastefull... So a long time ago I learned to measure how much water/nutrient mix I need to feed once a week... more often when using smaller pots

Here is the final resting spot for my atomic Malana Bomb auto-flower grow... IMAG0780.jpgIMAG0781.jpgIMAG0783.jpg Notice the GAS fireplace in the background... I strategically placed the "germinator" here so it can inhale the co2 that gas fireplaces give off 24/7 She will have her own 300W(278 draw) Growthstar PowerBloom Plus 8 model, with custom 7 spectrum band including UVB & IR
