Ive been reading into a few methods such as air cones, super root pots etc etc, but the stores around here are crap for hydroponic specific stuff, hence a lot of fabrication on my part or using off label LOL. I DO AGREE with you about the soil staying moist SOMEWHAT
I would like to temper that part of the response with this advice(not to you specifically)... EVERYONE when they start to become advanced, higher level growers should be learning, have learned already, or starting to get into your plants moisture needs, as things like Osmotic pressures etc etc can REALLY screw up a good feeding routine/soil mix. Now what I mean by knowing your plants moisture needs is AKIN to reading the leaves to decide when to feed or how heavy to feed based on what the leaves are telling you.. except it has to do with knowing your plants root system, and more specifically what it needs, and how it operates throughout its many stages of growth with particular notice being paid attention to moisture content of the root zone.
Ok, to be more specific..... A given plant, in a given setup, with its given phenotypic expression will use a certain amount of moisture in a certain span of time... theres no better way; if you like to space out your waterings so be it, if your like me, and you run a super dry soiless mix, youll like to feed every 3rd day perhaps...MOST books will tell or advise you to use pots with holes in the bottom and/or sides of the pot to allow for overflow when feeding.. I MOSTLY agree with this, especially if your skills are not up to a medium level at least. However, NO-ONE wants to waste water, or especially nutrients if you can help it! The fact is though that most, if not most a LOT of experienced growers dont need holes in their pots! This is because we ALL KNOW OR HAVE SEEN the effects of over/under watering.. and SHOULD BY NOW BE FAMILIAR WITH EXACTLY WHAT YOUR PLANT NEEDS TO GIVE IT ITS BEST ENVIRONMENT... (I WILL SAY DEPENDING ON SETUP & STRAIN, ITS SOMETIMES BETTER TO POUR A 10% OVERFLOW TO PREVENT SALT BUILDUP)(I WILL EXPLAIN THAT POINT LATER CAUSE I SEE PEOPLE ABOUT TO SLAP ME)... what Im saying is that we know how much water our plants are using when running 100%, so we simply on give them enough to maintain proper moisture levels throughout.
For instance... in MY SETUP, using a 5 gallon home depot bucket that has no drainage holes with 4.5 gallons of pro-mix HP... and running my lights 24/7 (veg cycle) it uses 2L of nutrient solution mix/water EVERY 3 DAYS... I know this as I frequently use a moisture meter for soil and monitor it just in case.. but thats cause Im a bit paranoid about losing a crop
Now while im personally not one of those people that care about "wasting" a little bit of nutrient solution or RO water, not everyone is that way so if you can learn to feed without runoff your not wasting as much if at all!
As I was saying, for my setup, my plants use a .5 to 1.0 gallons or (2-4 liters)... So in order to maintain PEAK moisture levels in my plants soils, I have to give my plants 2L every third day..
I have a moisture meter on top of that, and before I water/feed them i ALWAYS check it first... 9 times out of 10 though its 2L every third day for me in a 5 gallon bucket
THAT BEING SAID... I FULLY RECOMMEND THAT 8/10 GROWERS SHOULD USE POTS WITH DRAINAGE HOLES UNTIL THEY CONSIDER THEMSELVES AN EXPERT...
The reasons I cut the 4 big slots out from the sides of the trash can was to HOPEFULLY combat this issue of soil not draining properly... and for this grow, I have amended the soiless mix with an additional 50% of perlite.. making the end product somewhere around the range of 50% perlite, 50% Canna bio-terra plus
