If I vent my fan out of my grow box through a duct that goes into my attic and split it onto an existing exhaust out the roof would I even need a carbon scrubber. I have a 3'x2'x4' box and plan on using a 4 or 6 inch ventech fan with a speed controller. The duct from the top of box to the fan would be about 6 feet then about 15 feet of duct from fan out to roof. I live in a neighborhood where the houses are about 20 ft apart. I will have two to three plants going at a time.

I tried doing that when I first built my indoor grow area, which is only big enough for 3-4 plants. I ran a 4" exhaust straight up through the roof with a 4" inline fan, no carbon filter. On humid days when the air was heavy it brought the smell right down to ground level and you could smell it all around the outside of the house. Not a big problem where I live since the closest house is over 600' away, but anyone coming to the front door could smell it. A 4" fan is plenty big enough for your box. A 4" carbon filter only costs around $60. To me it's well worth it for your own security.

As Muddy said Get a decent carbon scrubber loads of them on ebay or amazon at great prices. I see some real good combos too carbon scrubber and and fan too going for great price on places I said above. They are worth every penny too you do not need a huge one either. You can get right up to the plant and still not smell when it is on.

I made a carbon scrubber for a Blue Kush and a Critical Cheese and it works fine. $15 all in. Check out DIY forums and get creative. If you have $100 to spend, there are excellent ones online. I'd advise you do that because all elecrtrical is guaranteed, not so with DIY devices, and if you set a fire (god forbid), that would get you in more trouble than the plants. Insurance company won't want to send to to AA

Thanks everyone. I am out of town on business. I am going to drop the $ and get a combo fan filter unit. I appreciate hearing about your prior experiences. I will be home Saturday and plan to start germinating my seeds as soon as I walk in the door :). I think that I have everything ready.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have a somewhat related question, and I figured it was better to ask here than to start a whole new thread for it.

I'm doing a small, outdoor grow on my balcony. I live in a condo complex in a big, fairly windy city. I'm pretty high up, so I'm not concerned about visibility or odor from street level. But I am concerned about the odor's possibly wafting over to my neighbors' balconies, directly above and below me. Am I being completely stupid here? Do I have anything to worry about?

My neighbors seem pretty cool, but the downstairs neighbors have little kids, and I don't want to cause any trouble with them.

Hijack away my friend. I have the same concerns. This will be my first grow so I can't help but I am sure someone here will have some ideas.

Hey Archer, first off good luck bro, growing :karma Cloud: coming at you :Sharing One:

Now I'm no expert but did grow 4 plants on my balcony this year :check: betty boo and blue Himalaya. I found betty to be much more pungent and both smelled more at night. They were positioned around 5 meters from my neighbours balcony and tho I'm sure they could smell it nothing was said. I planted a load of honeysuckle as that releases it's scent at night time too, as it turns out an hour or so after my other girls but I guess it all helps. Don't know how much help I've been...

I think that's very helpful, thanks. The neighbors I'm worried about -- the ones downstairs, with the kids -- don't use their balcony all that much, except on weekends. And when they do go out there, it's usually during the day. I'm less concerned about their wandering out at night and smelling the plants.

Even still, can't hurt to be too careful, right? I've positioned my grow on the far side of my balcony, away from where their balcony doors are. The position is all of about 10 feet away from the door area, but I'm hoping every little bit helps. For what it's worth, my balcony sits about 12-14 feet above theirs, and 12-14 feet below my upstairs neighbors'.

The balconies are made of solid concrete, with glass plating around all the sides as a windbreak and safety guard. When it's windy, the wind usually blows into and through my balcony, and out the sides; it doesn't seem to carry anything (odor or otherwise) up or down. Lately it's been extremely windy, to the point where I'm actually concerned about the stress to my little plants!

Yeah, you can't be too careful ;-) I had my girls lst'd to keep it on the down low, they were only 6" tall from the pot but wide... one got to about 4.5 feet wide lol
