Newpaper Pots for transfers

I would not mess about that messy soil blocks.
I have used Jiffy pots: http://www.jiffypot.com/en/products/jiffypot.html
Easy to use and they work much better than paper, only problem is that they are not free.

I have a soil blocker, I tried it a few times but its a PITA if you have to move the block for any reason, so I only used it that one spring, back to jiffy pots for me. mine is no where near as fancy as that one though



i also tried the newspaper thing but didn't like that at all

Now this is interesting.

Know anyone that's tried it? I imagine the soil would have to be quiet compact for it to stay as a block. How much does that inhibit root growth? How well do these blocked stay together when watered I wonder?

The compaction is really not an issue. I've used soil blocks in the past and I think they are one of the best ways to start seedlings, And they loosen once place in a pot of soil, they crumle easily too so they need to be handled gently. I'm ordering a block making tool. You could make one also

Soil block can be a little messy, but not usually.and its better for the plants IMO. No transplant shock at all. Place the blick in a pot when ready and they'll just take off! And tell me how you garden is soil without being a little messy...lol! Myself, I've never liked jiffy pots, they don't degrade fast enough and 1/2 the time you have to cut slits in the sides to let roots escape or your plant is root bound and doesn't grow.

I was thinking of just poking holes in the newspaper pot with a tac board and sticking it straight in the ground. The roots would grow out the holes then easily tear the paper as they expanded. I think it's the lack of holes that keeps them root bound.
