How do you plan on doing it without the runoff hole? I considered it but worried about drowning the roots. Air stone at the bottom or something?

The runoff is my only complaint sofar, my drip trays sucked and it was a total nightmare for fora while... Then I decided to put an empty 5 gallon bucket on the ground, with a milk crate ontop of it, and the plants ontop of that. So far so good, figure ill only have to empty the buckets maybe twice all grow

I had a dream I flooded my house from run off and had to live on the streets lol. What I did was instead of drilling the hole 2 inches up from the bottom I drilled it as low on the bucket as I could. Next I fitted a 3/4 90 degree elbow in the hole. Then I cut a about a 4-6" piece of clear hose on the 90 fitting and capped it with some rubber corks from the dollar store. Now when I water i just continue to SLOWLY add water until its about 2 inches up the hose. VOILA!!! No mess, no run off you can control exactly how much water is in the rez. And to flush all i do is put buckets in the tub pull the cork and run water as usual. Ill try to do a write up with some pics or drawings for the visual learners like myself

Here is a drawing I did of my no drip hempy. I currently have peppers in them as a test run but when I get a chance I will do a write up and even a mj grow with them. So far I love them!!! Only thing different is you gotta water slower so the solution has a chance to drain to the bottom otherwise I can see a chance of overwatering. All in all its a grand idea I hope you all agree
