The main thing here Pat is not to give up. First grow can be tough, especially with autos outdoors. I've struggled with my autos outside too for sure.
Next time take em out of the greenhouse and put them somewhere shady when you know it's gonna be hot. They should be ok with hot days in all shade. Nobody will know when they're small...
He has a completely fenced in back yard, 6 foot privacy fence. No reason to even have them in the greenhouse. He knows now lol.
Outdoors is a whole different animal then indoor. I've been trying for years and haven't made it to an actual harvest yet outside. Weather, bugs and budrot are a bitch. Fingers crossed I can get one this year... 
Getting them to grow is step 1 and then finishing them is 1000 different things. I was making progress and then moved 3 miles away and apparently now I'm in a totally different climate I look at it like my indoor covers all my needs and outdoor is strictly for fun and learning and any smoke would be great. You'll be much more informed and prepared every year
