My tap root sprouted this morning, so I need to get it into soil very soon. My question is, I bought Hydro
Mix HP by Atami. The guy at the grow store said that it it is pH balanced so I don't need to add anything else to it, but I keep seeing ppl talk about perlite and other additives. Can someone please explain to me what it is, do I need it, do I need some thing else? Thank you

Perlite is used for drainage and aeration purposes. Some people prefer to add it to get more oxygen to the root zone and prevent over watering. I'm not sure if your mix needs it as I have never used it. I usually add dolomite lime for extra ph buffer in any mix.

As far as the mix you selected I wouldn't put a seed directly into it, it's too hot, has too much nutrients for seedlings. You need some seed starter mix and dig a handful of hot soil out of the pot and fill with seed starter then plant into that.

Don't worry about adding dolomite, your stuff should be fine. If it is ph balanced, as you say it is. The perlite question, which is the only question you asked, is often debated as far as usage.

Mindseye is corrrect in it's usage. As far as if you need it or not, well it won't hurt it. and if you like to feed your plants more, then you can add some. It certainly won't hurt anything.

For a 3 cu.f bag I add two gallons of perlite.

some use more, many use less, it is up to you, and it is cheap. Find what works best for you.

Hope that helps.

So, is it really too hot to start a seedling? I planted ityesterday. It's been in the soil almost 16 hours already. Should I pull it out and start over?

I think your committed now. See how it goes, I've never used that medium but I looked at the ingredients, usually soil with supplements in it already isn't preferred for starting seeds

Spot on Mindseye, You are learning Big Bro, now aren't you glad you came to AFN.

As a new grower, it is in your genes to panic about stuff. But relax, things will be fine. we are here to help.

With a little luck and some cooing, she may pop up yet. I can go back, but are you covering your seed in soil with plastic wrap or a clear dome covering? It would be a good idea to do so.

I will be back to see how you are doing. I will check to see if you have ajournal.

Peace
