No plan to grow, just planning a grow. I looked around and there is a lot of info but no really densely packed thread. Figured I would start a thread based on what my grow would be and let everyone fill in the gaps, give options, and info for other situations and environments. Focusing on autos since this is AFN.
Main concerns:
1: Latitude, last frost date in spring and first frost date in fall.
2: Terrain like mountains, swamp, forest, farm land.
3: Local pest like animals and insects.
4: Prep work like digging and amending holes, clearing brush and branches.
5: Available time to visit plots. Example1 hour once a week.
For me latitude is 42. Last frost date is around end of may give or take a couple weeks depending on year. First frost in fall mid to late september give or take. Recently weather has been anything but predictable.
Terrain would be farm land. Remote locations that have been untouched for extended periods of time, long time pasture with creeks and stream and bare spots in feilds. I wont trash a farmers feild even if its only a couple plants. Their crops are their money.
Animal pest include mice, rabbits and deer. Bugs are hoppers, mites, japanes beetles, grub larva, snails and slugs.
Prep work will be digging a decent hole and amending as needed. Most untouched land and pasture are a great dark loam with a touch of sand. Fields are pretty poor. Sandy, little humus or organic material and pretty poor nutrients.
My available time is about an hour or so a week during grow. Prep in feilds would be done at planting. Prep for pasture and fallow land done in fall or as soon as soil is workable. Maintenance would be applying pest control, water and feed if need be. Inspecting for chewed leaves, discolored leaves stems, holes in stems from these pesky larva that tunnel down the stem shittin out a dust, and molds or mildew.
I would like to focus on those. Elaborating on testing/judging soil and amending/amendments as well as pest control. My amendments would be humus/compost in fields for sure. Worm castings, soil micro life stimulants for sure. In pasture/fallowed land more along the lines of worm casting. Recommendations taken for sure! Feeding would be "weekly, weekly" the amendments would focus on soil structure and beneficial micro life. If you want strong potent plants you need strong healthy roots!!
