Getting ready to fire up my first auto grow and noticed that many growers on this site use the new AIR pots, I have been using smart pots since they first became available and have plenty of them. Is it worth spending the money on the AIR pots for this first go round or should I use my smart pots? Growing TLO

Hey and Welcome!
I don't have a good answer, yet! I have one grow with smart pots and it went swell. I started a grow with air pots and it did not. Not because of the airpots though!! (Just me doing stupid stuff)
Anyways I know folks swear by them ao I would suggest that perhaps if you got one or two airpots you could do a comparison of the two. That way you would find out for a minimal investment and answer your question. I think it would also be a valuable addition to the collective knowledge here at AFN.
Peace and happy growin!

Either or really bro. I like them both but I do prefer the airpots. :Sharing One:

It went swell??? Is this Eddie Haskell? *LOL*

I prefer the air pot but if I already had the Smart pots I'd use them ... I find the fabric pots let the soil pack in a little deeper as they expand during a grow ... leaves the top of the soil low but that can be compensated for by filling it to the rim when planting. Smart pots are great for plunging into the ground and avoiding almost all transplant shock ... Air pots are more solid and I think the Smart pots let the roots get 'shook-up' when moving the pot more than air pot would ... So I guess it depends on how you use them ...

yeah I used the smart pots twice myself and didnt like the roots shifting or the root ball cracking everytime I moved n lifted it about.I found the dirt pot(hydrofarms brand of smartpots)seems to keep shape and dont crack the root ball nowhere as easily.imo they are way superior to smart pots imho...food for thought.never used an airpot however...one day...one day LOL!

Smart pots as in felt pots? Well.. True.. You shouldnt move them so much. but how often do you have to lift your plant high off the ground? Just testing the weight of the pot for watering purposes shouldnt cause the rootball to break if the pot is well made, and full of soil. Not with a 3gal at least.

Anyway... the felt pots also filter any runoff water that drains out of the pot, so you won't have bits of dirt everywhere on the floor of your tents and such. Makes cleaning easier, and less frequent. Also, a benefit that I just discovered of the felt pots, is that if they are on the floor of your tent, they suck up the water that drained out of them which is good because it cleans that up, and it also, lets them take back some from the bottom of the pot if it is too dry...
Just some thoughts.

LOL thats exactly what Im talking about actually.sure if ya move it around a lot,yet just lifting it to see how heavy it was or just shifting it a couple feet to just shuffle a couple plants around,it cracked every time for me.the dirt pot only did that once for me,and the dirt pots handles make it far easier to employ unlike the smart pots.I know sounds wierd dude, but that why I dont use SP's anymore.kept messing the ball up.
