Hey y’all, totally new to this! Any help/info will be much appreciated. I'm starting this thread before I have anything completed/assembled so I can get input on all the parts/pieces and see whether this is the best set up.

So here is what I am thinking of doing…

Strain: Lowryder #1 (12-16”)
Amount: 1 (2 max)
Grow medium: Soil
Pot size: H: 24cm D: 26cm
Grow area: Cardboard box - insulated with insulation pad, then mylar stuck onto insides (standing upwards H: 70cm L: 55cm D/W: 40cm)
Light source: Undecided
Reflector: Help needed
Ventilation: Help needed
Odor control: Help needed

Now for the annoyingly nooby part... questions!

1. Could I cut the top part open and instead cover it in with the reflector? It could be lowered in and being two parts, this could also potentially help with heat and ventilation.

2. For 1-2 auto flowering lowryder plants (probably lowryder#1 as it is apparently less smelly), would 1 Growlush 130w 2700K Grow Light, generating approx. 8,000 Lumens be enough for the growth and flowering? (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GROWLUSH...Hydroponics&hash=item4d0303fb00#ht_2961wt_907). Or should money be invested in having both 2700K and 6500K CFL’s, or even more CFL bulbs in general?

3. Is an exhaust/ventilation fan and ducting needed for such a small space/plant grow?

4. Would the odor become strong and obvious during at any stage for this plant, would I need some type of odor control?

5. As this would be situated in my wardrobe, would it be enough to simply open it up once or twice a day and let it all air out as a form of ventilation and cO2 replenishment?

6. How many fans would be needed, and to hit where exactly?

7. Would I need a proper reflector to get this grow done, or would I be okay with an home made insulated and mylar’d shoe box cover/posterboard. Another option is to make a proper one from metal ducting but then again this box would only be used once or twice a year with 2 plants MAX.

8. Small desk fan, or pc blow fan, or both?

More info about my situation: Live at home with parents in a rented house (will grow when they are on long holiday). Reason for wanting to grow: I’ve only smoked a few times but I think growing would be both fun and much cheaper then buying. Also considering just finding a smaller box and descaling everything for 1 max plant… thoughts?

Thanks

1 I don't know how sturdy a cardboard box will be and I'd also be concerned about the light causing a fire. I've seen more than a few houses burn down due to wonky grows...safety first.

2. Check out the CFL section they might be able to help you. I think you'd want at least 50w per plant so you should be fine with one or two under that. You could use the 2700 all the way through but you will get better results both spectrum.

3. Yes venting is needed. I imagine a small computer fan at the top of the box pulling air out would be sufficient for the heat and then you'd want to cut a vent at the bottom to allow fresh air in.

4. You probably will need some sort of odor control one you get into flowering. One of those ONA gel blocks might be enough but a carbon filter is always the best option.

5. That may be enough air but ducting in air from out side the wardrobe would be best.

6. Minimally just the one exhaust fan. Ideally you would also have an occilating fax blowing on the plants too and if they are close to the light one blowing between the light and plants.

7 any reflector is always better. Premade are better than home made.

Here's where it gets sticky...growing in a rental bad idea...growing in your parents house, without permission bad idea. Suppose there is a leak or something and you landlord comes in and finds your box/firehazard. Your folks come back from holiday to find out they've been evicted or worse you're in jail. You'd probably do better to find some secluded spot out side and do an outside grow. Best of luck and keep reading.

Hmm... quite interesting. Thanks. Does anyone know how bad the lowryder #1 actually smells during flowering?

It's depends on the lowryder phenotype, some stink while others have low odor. My friend recently grew a few female lowryders and the smell wasn't bad at all :bong:

Hey man, glad to have you here on the site! I strongly urge you to consider everything before you start this project. You say you'll grow while the parents are on a long holiday, but you do realize it takes 3.5 to 4 months to finish one plant(seed->flower->harvest), right? As well, there will be a clear increase in the electricity bill that may raise your parents concern. Not only while growing, but ESPECIALLY during harvest odor will definitely be an issue. Odor is the first thing to get you caught if not some one talking about it. Remember, if you get caught your parents are held liable because it's their residence. They're the ones who signed off on the lease. What about landlord inspections, is there a clause for those in your parents lease?

First time growing is really intricate - especially in a place you've never grown in before. It'll take a couple of grows before you get everything down. The first couple of grows you will have to have a lot of time set aside to monitor noise, temperature and growth. As well, you'll have to have water sitting out and plant nutrients have some odor to them as well.

I'm sure this reply isn't something you wanted to hear, but we really preach member safety here - I don't want to put anyone in a predicament where their entire housing and family situation can go to crap over learning to grow.

I read autoflowering lowryder takes like 60-70 days all up? Thank you. This is in fact, what i was wanting to hear because after a few replies i started to think of the cost-benefit and maybe we can say that this wouldn't be the ideal place to start a first grow. Sucks, but it's better taking safe advice then going under, so won't be doing it. Are there any alternatives? There are no real secluded outdoor areas near my neighborhood so i'm guessing an outdoor grow won't work. Would the same advice go for growing 1 lowryder hidden in the yard in a pot in the ground behind other plants?

Are there any alternatives?

yes there is why dont you read up on some of the PC grows here at AFN, because your cardboard box will get you caught, by mom and dad and the landlord during inspection for the smell all pot plants smell, no they reek... read a little more...

Hmm, OK thank you for that info. I read up on the PC grow box's. They don't sell them here, all of them seem to be made and sold in the U.S and (primarily) the U.K. Getting one over here would be around US $380, quite expensive for someone like me that doesn't smoke much. It is interesting, combining that with LST could work. I'll look into it more. Do you think it would ultimately be worth it in the long run though? Thanks!

Hey holly, I'm glad you understood the perspective of my advice. Initial start up costs for a grow are usually pretty high and a lot of the stuff (even carbon filters) are consumables and will need to be replaced eventually. When I started my first grow I invested a little over $1100 all said and done. Since then I've probably spent another $2500-3000 over the course of two years. The outdoor grow I couldn't offer much advice on, I've tried a few guerilla grows and failed (trying again this year), wild animals are always eating my plants. :cuss:
