In two minds weather to start in final pots like i see mentioned so much or to start in smaller pots and transplant. Pot size is 20lts / 5 gallon I have experience with transplanting but don't want to add any delay with such a short time span to work with. I am also unsure if the small pot would be fully rooted in just 10-15 days and with flowering starting just after this it does not leave much room for error.

If i was to start in the final pot, how do you protect the seedling from the soil being to hot? As the soil I want to use will have enough ferts within it to last 4-6 weeks so the bag says which is ideal if I transplant into it after 10/15 days but the more I read the less i want to start in small pots but I don't want to go burning them up because the soil is to hot for them at such a young age.

The more i read the more i confuse myself, as any cock ups don't have time, like normal plants to be addressed and fixed. I am about a week away from starting my grow.

The bigger the final pot the more likely it will need to be transplanted.

My experience with five gallon soil straight to pot has not been so good--others have no problems. Think the biggest obstacle is keeping the pot moist without under/over watering the seedling. These conditions have a tendency to stunt plant growth (my two plants ended up being a few inches tall). With coco I might try, but, with soil indoors the seedling has to work its tap root to the bottom and then develop lateral roots.

One thing you can do is replace the hot soil with a gallon or so of something like Warrior which is a starter mix. Scoop out or leave space for a good gallon of the starter soil. Get your PH set with the soil (pre-treat by watering and adjusting the PH) then the germed seed/seedling will have less of a challenge growing its initial roots and avoid suddenly being transplanted into hot soil etc.

That is what is fun--experimenting. These days three gallon pots is the biggest I use and generally use only 2 or 1 gallon fabric posts with coco. Soil is different and the bigger the pot = more nutrients and time before or if you need to fertilize.

Cheers

Should have said this will be an outdoor grow, well started indoors then placed outside. I have space for iver the 5 gal or small pot. I am only doing 2 at a time, so not really room for "experimenting" although I do like the idea of an inner ring of seedling soil, and this would save any issues of transplanting. And gives the tap root the full space of the 5 gal pot.

I don't plan on feeding anything other then water although I am buying some grow/bloom just in case.

Would store bought (uk) garden center soil have everything the plants needs?

John innes no 2 + john innes no3 mixed 50/50 then a 3 to 1 of soil and perlite
John innes seedling soil 3 to 1 with perlite as the inner ring of soil.
Plant magic grow and bloom as feed if needed.

Do not plan on ph`ing the water, just letting it sit outside in a container for a day or so before using. Feeding a little amount to the soil and Then building the amount used up over time till I can fully soak the pot without harm to the plant.

Sounds good organic.

From what I have observed--UK--has some real good ph balanced soil choices--better than what is available in US.

Check out the Organic section and the soil/nute section--you will either find a good soil or a soil UK grower.

Good luck.

Popped into a local garden center today, there is so much to choose from. They had loads of different types and makes with each back of the bag i read sounding better then the last. Though have settled on 1 of 2 types now, so when i go back with the cash on Tuesday I will make my mind up then.

Cant wait to start this, its been a few years since my last indoor grow.

Sorry for post in your thread, but I have same questions. Transplanting can stress the autos and this will affect the yield, so will I go wrong if put them on final 5 gallon pot ? In my thread they said me I can put the hot soil in 5 gallon pot and just make conus form with light soil, so the seedlings will reach the hot soil later. This is what I will do, is it wrong ? Im talking for outdoor.

Don't worry viliqn everyone's welcome :smoke:

It is the route I will be taking, an inner ring of seeding soil. I managed to get hold for a 4ltr pot so I can build up the "hot" soil around this, remove pot place seedling soil in the center and then plant the seed in the middle. Then place the 5 gallon pot under a 150w light for 10 or so days just to give it the best start to life and hopefully stop quite a bit of stretching as the weather here is a bit up and down atm... Roll on summer.

Then once placed outside I will start another seed, this way I will be able to adjust things if problems arise. Then two weeks before finishing the first plant I will start another seed. I hope to keep that up in till the weather turns again by then I should have enough stash to last me till the following spring.

That is the plan anyway

Nice. I'll keep an eye on your thread !! :smoke:

Is growing in the ground impossible? IMO thats the best solution when growing outdoors, if you can make it work.
