TLDR - Looking for good lighting for a 5x5 area, trying to avoid high wattage HID due to heat. Ideally looking for led panels on a max budget of around 400$. I've been doing some reading and have seen a lot of mixed opinions about blurple leds.

Hey everyone! The forums sure have changed a lot since I've last been here.

It's been a while since my last grow, was running a 400w HID in a 2x4 space. I'm looking to upgrade to a 4x4 or 5x5 space for my next and wanted to get your thoughts on the best way to light it up.

I'm guessing that most of you will advise me to run a 1000w HID, which I likely could do, but the heat produced could be problematic. My 400w with 6" cooltube and canfan gave me some troublein a 2x4 space, not sure how bad a 1000w would be in a 5x5 space ( about 200 cu ft ) with an 8" cooltube and 400 cfm fan. Room temp is about 70-72c and not much wiggle room there.

So, I was looking into LEDs, but the problem is that I'm unable to afford quality and would rather not get into a DIY project.

Most people seem to have good things to say about these panels from a company called Meizhi.

I planned to get 2 of the 600w panels for 6 plants in a 5x5 space, but I'm thinking that it won't be enough coverage? I'm also guessing the claim that they are as powerful as a 600w HID is BS with the power they draw. I've looked at Viparspectra, Mars Hydro, and some other brands, but the panels from Meizhi seem to have the most balance spectrum and best reviews.

I was also thinking that maybe I could run my 400w HID with 450w Meizhi panels on either side (or maybe x2 900w panels without the HID if I can afford it).

Or maybe someone has a better suggestion for my price range?

when you were looking into led lights did you look at COB lighting theres quite a few companys in the usa doing kits that ready made or some self assembly they seem to be the way to go and you can always add more cob lights to your setup if you want more it really simple once you get into it

Cobs too costly to light a 5x5 tent, my budget is around 400 xD

I'm interested in these Meizhi panels, but I don't think 2 of these 600w panels will be enough. Would likely need x2 900w and some supplemental red spectrum during flower.

They claim the 600w panels can replace a 600w hps, but I'm highly doubtful with that power draw.

Really just trying to figure out how many panels I would need getting a lot of mixed opinions.

Do not judge by the power draw judge them by the output

I'm a Autocob user too. Since your budget is fixed you might take look at the "Mars" lights. It seems quite a few in here have bought them.

The cheap ebay mars 300’s served me well early on.. but if I am him I would do a diy cob. Build and never look back

Thanks guys, think I'm going to go with the 1200w Meizhi in a 4x4 tent (4-6 plants in 5 gal, thinking 6 might be a squeeze). I've looked into Mars and some other brands, but apparently Meizhi has the highest par value.

If you're buying from China anyways, go for Chinese cobs. The brands you see are just those with good overseas marketing, mostly trading companies reselling. Local growers don't even buy them. These trading companies will approach smaller manufacturers who don't have the capabilities to market overseas. They will order from these manufacturers but will set a ridiculously low budget, forcing the manufacturer to cut corners secretly. End result is an inferior product at high price because traders wish to maximize profits. The cover will usually look cool as hell and costs more than the lights it houses since molding costs is on the high side.

If you can, go to the source. If you have a Chinese speaking friend, its not difficult to do. I'm not a technical person at all so i only understand the overall idea. Don't quote me on this but if you find the right company, they will be those who buys BRIDGELUX or similar dyes and assembles their own COB chips. Comparatively, DIY peeps buy ready made chips direct from manufacturer. So theoretically, if you want similar cob results at lower prices, this is my suggestion.
