I've grown with both wide and narrow in the 5 gallon variety. To be honest I haven't noticed any difference in my auto grows.

I have read that wider containers are better but again I've noticed no difference.

Has anyone else seen any difference between wider and narrower containers of the same volume?

Theres that lol. From a design standpoint the wider base would be sturdier as well. Less likely to tip over if/when the plant got top heavy.
If theres any actual qualitative differences other than that, its beyond me!

I've heard that plants will grow wider in wider containers but I haven't seen any difference.

Believe wider is better but there is less usable soil in wider as wide pots have more drainage material on bottom.

I do not have side by side comparison to support / Stoners Science!

I’m moving to the tall variety since floor space is a premium with me. The diameter difference is 2”, 8” for tall and 10” for squat ( I’m using three gallon pots). There is no way a plant will cause the pot to tip over, the soil weighs too much. I grow in a Gorilla Shorty (2x2.5) and have never had to install the extension so, I’m at 4’11” in height AND have my exhaust fan in the top, lights ( Timbergrow COB) just below.
