Probably 2 inches is a bit low, I only used 2 inches because someone above mentioned it. It can depend on what sort of lighting you have (if it grows very dense or stretchy. I'd say probably 4 or 6 inches (5?) is a decent place to start in general. But I'm no expert. Others should chime in.
