Here's the deal: I started 2 Think Differents via the shot glass method and planted in TLO soil. One is already growing it's first set of true leaves while the other is just a stem with a seed "head". Should I leave it alone and wait for the seed's shell to fall off or help it along?

edit: the temp is 84 during lights on and the RH is always around 40%.

My latest grow had trouble with the shells on 2 seedlings, I got my wife (long fingernails) to pick it off, soon open and catch up, just be careful not to pull the plant out of the soil

Plant a little deeper next time say 2cm and I guarantee it won't happen again.

Well, I'd advice against trying to remove the shell. Just give it time.

The humidity is way too low for seedlings. 40% will often mean trouble in any stage of growth.

Good luck!

Mist the seedling several times a day so the shell doesn't dry out. They shed the husks much easier that way. Follow TaNgs advice next time and plant them a little deeper. The moisture from the soil will keep the husk moist.

does this only apply if you plant the seed direct in soil? I have used rootriot and had no problems(tight holes) but could only get rootit(loose holes) and had problems

So would misting the young plant with a crash helmet still make it lose it itself?

Yes, if you have one that won't shed it's husk, misting will help even in plugs. I used to use Rapid Rooters but had so many problems with damping off I stopped using them.

How should I go about increasing the humidity (and also what is the range I should shoot for)? My last grow stayed at 40% the entire grow (which may explain the small yield).

Ok I set up a humidifier near the tent. I'll check the RH in a few hours trying to get to 80%.

About 65% while in veg, then lowered to 40% during flowering. Once you start your final cleansing, then down to 25% for the last week or so.
