I’m starting some auto seeds for an outdoor grow and I’m wondering about the best way to go about it. We have some pretty intense heat (and sun) here in Texas (think southern Spain) and I’ve started a few from seed outside in 10 gallon smart pots but the 100° (38°C) temperature seems to slow down the seedling growth rate. So, I’m starting some inside. Now I’m faced with starting some in Root Riot cubes and others in solo cups and FoxFarm soil, under a fluorescent fixture. I know that it’s better to start auto flowering plants in their final container but is this an absolute? I mean, I could pop them in 3 gallon smart pots and grow maybe 6-8 under the light for 2-3 weeks before moving them outside I to the sun and the heat; but I was thinking about growing them in the solo cups (and putting the Root Riot cubes into solo cups) for 2 weeks and then transplanting then into 10 gallon smart pots. This would allow me to get 20 started and growing well prior to going outside. Am I hurting my chances/harvest with this method/strategy?

What strategy would you use to get started during these high temperatures? It’ll be this hot daily until late September.

Hey mate, i start all my seedlings inside under t5 lights. I think the key to getting a successful yeild is in the first 30 days. I would start them in the biggest practical pot you can, I use 1gal pots. My seedlings only spend the night under light as i put them in the sun of a day(i would not put small seedlings in intense sun) if starting inside you will have to introduce them to the sun gradually to avoid shock. @912GreenSkell has written some of the best guides on the net on growing autoflowers under the sun see if you can find them and have a read i would put a link for you but I'm hopeless with tech. Also strain selection will play a big part in those temps, im in Australia and my summer temperature is also very extreme with high humidity and I have decided to run mostly sativas in the heat. I hope this helps some, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be along shortly to give some more advice

Thanks brother! I’ll see if I can find those threads. So, you give yours 24hrs if light- no night period at all?

Yeah buddy 24hr light until they outgrow my seedling box inside. Also to answer your original question i don't think transplanting hurts growth at all if timed correctly and done right. Good luck with your grow

Perfect! I’m going to transplant early - WAY before getting root bound. Just want to wait until they’re ready to go outside to put them into big pots so that they’ll go to 10 gallon bags each at 2-3weeks of age in a solo cup. I’m thinking I’ll let them get 3 nodes insides and then start transitioning them to outdoors. I’m going to compare them to the seeds that I germinated outdoors to see if the heat is actually effecting the growth rate. The ones I started outside get full early morning sun in the early morning, shaded sun until about 2pm and heavily shaded sun in the extreme heat of the afternoon.
