Hey let's turn this into a programmer's hell.

What if you did away with the rep system and instead instituted micro tipping. The tips would be purchased at the afn store at a discount of course. And then given out to members as the person who purchased them felt. Once you get a certain amount of tips you can run over to the afn store and buy something for free or reduced price.

You would never have any inflation because people would simply be paying to give you a tip. Or you could even buy your own

I don't actually know if there is a store, but what the heck that could be useful too.

As a new grower ,when I have a question I search multiple sites at once. I very rarely look at a persons "rep" or post count. I usually look at what's in the thread , I.E. pictures of their grow or just the content of their posts. And because there is so much info on the web it's easy to cross check/fact check most questions I have.

When I was on an old car forum they had a "post whore" thread solely for the purpose of upping post counts. Guys had upwards of 20k posts without contributing a thing.

I like the badges. You make a grow thread, you get a badge. Guys with a lot of badges usually have experience , and with that , sound advice.

True, but I've grown successfully from several of the vendors here at AFN and don't have badges.. I'm not out to get some sort of "online reputation" by having the most "flair".. Any of us that have been around here a few years know who is who, so it's easier for us to filter out the nonsense or "white noise", if you will.. IMO, trophies should be for guys who have repeatedly used the same methods and produced great results, no just someone who tried an LED panel and said, "Cool, weed", or those who tried a soil and said, "It works.." Call me crazy, but IRL, I wouldn't just assume because someone has a massive tomato plant in their backyard, that they know how to grow tomatoes.. If they did it every year, I'd start to pay attention.. Some folks get lucky and get that one pheno that maximizes yield in an uncharacteristic way.. Then others, grow a bunch of midgets, but do it consistently and fruitfully.. That's where I make the differentiation between who I listen to for advice and those who I listen to as "great detail, but needs more info...."

Maybe I'm being too critical... I love all the folks here as this is CLEARLY one of the best forums amongst ALL topics!! It's rare to see trash talking and bad-mouthing; usually just a bunch of folks trying to help each other out.. Hence, why I frequent here faaaaaaaar more than even the car or science sites I visit!!! Good People!!! That's where I feel some folks may take offense to some of the responses and content as if their response is the ONLY culpable or plausible one. It's great to have the camaraderie, however not everyone here deserves a gold star for participation.. I'm one of them as I don't feel I deserve the rep I've received over the years.. It's not much, but even then, I can name about a dozen folks here who deserve rep; most of it from their vast array of awesome threads and quick responses to folks trying to fight off pests or deficiencies.. Regardless, I think some sort of "vetting" should be used so it can preserve the intention of rep and not squander it for the sake of popularity..

I agree w/ getting rid of rep altogether ... it's meaningless now that some members have turned it into a popularity contest ... if a grower wants their advice to be taken seriously then they should put a link to one or more of their journals in their signature. That way all it takes is a couple quick clicks to see who is harvesting bud and who is shoveling BS ...

Reputation points aren't why I log in everyday, I actually rarely log off. Why, cause this place rocks! I've been on here reading for over a year, a member for 8 months and I learn something new everyday. I love it! I think if you're on this site participating you know who's who and no amount or lack of points changes who each one of us is. I can see points being somewhat useful to a new member in how they choose to absorb advice, when I first joined its what I did. I imagine a lot of the folks that join do too. If that's the case maybe we should keep them to help gain and retain active new members. I was new to forums when I joined and I know nothing about running one so I'm good with whatever helps AFN grow, I'll trust your decision.
@Son of Hobbes you're doing a great job:pass:

I see what your saying about the badges. They have almost become as meaningless as the rep points. As far as I can tell tho the moderators do the vetting for them so there is some substance behind them, but as you stated , its up to the individual to go the extra mile and fact check. Or the recipient of said badges to post links to their grow logs, threads etc.

I've been searching forums since the late 90's and AFN is by far the best community I've been apart of although I'm more of a lurker than a contributor. I stand firm on my affinity for the badge system and agree it could use a few tweeks.

The badges are only meant as a bit of fun collecting them or to show support for a seed breeder you like.
None of the badges actually acknoledge someones skill or knowledge.(that i know of)
If your here a while you just get to know who to ask for certain things.
We have a collection of the best and most knowledgable auto growers on the planet on this site.

It definitely needs a reset and new controls. I began wondering when I saw a group here suddenly skyrocket in rep, surpassing my 3 years worth in 3-6 months. If I've worked this hard to earn what I have, something is definitely amiss.

Simply put, should we reset reputation?

We've unfortunately seen where the reputation system was abused by many members at one point in time and we know it used to be a very valued system to many members and seen as "measuring stick" of sorts to others.

That said, what are the thoughts here on us FIXING how rep can be given for starters (that was the biggest issue,) then resetting and wiping the slate clean? Everyone starts at 0, we have a new system in place (which we can explain) for how rep gets given out and can be given out, and rather than some inflated number you see on members that you might go "how the **** did that person get such high rep?" we might see some actual merit to the reputation system again.

The other thought I had and some may not dig this and no hard feelings if you don't, but for us to reset reputation at the start of the new year. That way all rep is current and relative. Can go both ways lol!

What do you think AFN? Yay? Nay? Ideas?
