Hey AFN, I'm thinking about getting an auto8 2.2 gal tray system and have a SOG set up in my 2x4. Has anybody tried it before? Pros and Cons with this kind of set up?

Reason for trying to switch is so I can have multiple strain going per harvest. TIA and Happy Holidays!

A SOG is clone only 4+ plants per sqft. That system is going to give large plants in hydro mediums and would not be able for your goal. You could use 4 auto pots in that tent but it will get crowded. It's also a lot of money for something you don't seem entirely knowledgeable of.

If you want multiple strains you could do a 6 x 2 gallon Dutch bucket system for cheaper. Multiple strains are a pain to feed in the same reservoir and worse is that autos lack the genetic uniformity of clones so different growth rates and nutrient needs are real problems.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking of getting short strain plants but I never really considered them getting too big because of autopots. I will look into the dutch bucket system. Thanks again!

I’ve been thinking of this a lot.

Could we fashion something to divide each autopot into 4 quadrants and plant 4 per 2.2 gal pot? (I’ve never done this or seen it done, so not sure if it’s feasible...keeping roots separated for the 9-10 weeks it would take to finish flowering).

That’s roughly 2 liters of volume for each of the 4 plants. Fill them with perlite/vermiculite and run it like a hybrid hempys/ebb n flow SOG, except you let the autopots do the watering for you. 32 plants in roughly 8 sq feet.

OR...if dividing a pot 4 ways isn’t feasible, what about a 2x2 or 2x4 flood tray with an aqua valve in the bottom? Fill it with a bunch of smaller 1/2 gal pots...or 2 liter bottles...or 6” rock wool cubes?

I started thinking about this when I saw the aqua plates on the autopots website. Is anyone using a bunch those together for a SOG setup? They look like they wouldn’t provide enough volume for the roots of 4-5 plants.

I haven't done it, but I have definitely considered the flood tray idea controlled by an aquavalve. It would allow trying a bunch of strains in a small space. Heck, there are growers on here that produce very impressive plants in solo cups! Just think of what you could do in a bunch of 1 gallon containers! As Damien mentions though, combining different strains on the same reservoir can be a pain. FWIW, I have done it in my current grow, so it can work, although not optimally for every plant. You just end up limiting all the ladies to whatever works for the fussy princess in the gang. Not ideal, but doable.

Good luck with your decision and the resulting grow. :goodluck:

Is there a limit to how big a flood tray you can use with a single autovalve? logically, it seems tray size wouldn't matter...as long as the tray bottom is level and the water can drain evenly.

Sorry about not answering earlier, somehow I missed your response, and accidentally ran into it tonight.

Anyway, with regard to your question, there is a limit because presumably at some point you will have so many plants in there that the tubing and valve cannot deliver water fast enough to keep up with what the ladies are drinking. However, I am pretty certain that one aquavalve would be more than capable to handle anything you can fit in a 2x4 space. One of these days, I may put together a tray that fills the bottom of my 2x4 and try a bunch of small pots. Could be a lot of fun.

Again, apologies for missing your question earlier. :goodluck: :pighug:
