Gathering up stuff for my first grow and wondering if I need to get that expensive organic soil that I see everyone growing with here. Anyone ever used anything from like home depot/menards/lowes that works just the same? I would mix up my own but since im running one or two plants at a time I dont find it necessary to buy the full bags and mix it myself and have a bunch left over with nowhere to put it.

Any and all help is appreciated guys.

Menards carries promix and promix ultamit organic whitch I use.Home depot and lowes also carry organic mixes just dont get miricle gro.You can add a little perlite to these and you'll be good to go.

Ok cool thanks, anyone else have any experiences or advice? Trying to get as much info as I can

I use an organic soil called Lamberts that I get at Home Depot ... I mix it 1/1 w/ Perlite and it works ... w/o the Perlite it is too heavy ...

most of the ready mix soils are too low in ph right out of the bag...home depot let me stick my accurate 8 ph probe in several broken open bags of soil..I got ph values anywhere from 4.5 to
6.0 (the best was actually Miracle Grow, but it was dry...wet it drops like a rock.)...
I recommend you dampen whatever soil you choose and ph it first before you use it...
also. start your germs in non-fertilized seed starter soil...autos have no use for ferts their first couple of weeks..."hot" pre-fertilized soil will only stunt them or worse.:2cents:

I have been looking at soil for awhile and I have come to realize that hereb4 is right, most soil PH is low. I just got Promix from Menards and I just added dolomite lime (1 tbsp per gallon).

Which Pro Mix did you get? Pro Mix already has dolomite lime added and no additional is necessary. In fact, adding more could cause your pH to go too high.

Thanks for the input everyone, Ill make a run to the store and do some research there, see what they have and pricing.
