Question regarding growing in solo-cup sized pots. I was wondering what kind of odor is present in these small grows. Right now I have a Northern Lights auto growing in a 5L pot and it STINKS. So I was wondering, if growing in a smaller container significantly reduces the odor at all. For instance, would a solo-cup sized plant, outside, produce noticeable odor?

Good to know.

Was curious, because living in Europe, I've heard of many people growing in their gardens or on their balconies, but can't figure out how they control the odor. Was thinking that if I used a small pot, I could potentially grow in my small (~900 m2) garden, by hiding the plant within the other plants growing. But if odor will be that much of an issue, I may need to figure something else out. Would being outdoors, one plant, allow the odor to diffuse better thereby reducing the noticeable odor of the plant?

You will want a very low odor strain if you are trying to be very stealth about it, out of what I've grown I'd say the lowest odor would be probably mephisto genetics fantasmo express

I've come to realize that "low odor" is a very subjective term. The Northern Lights auto strain I have going now is supposedly "low odor", though I believe the person writing that description must have lost his nose in a freak honey badger incident.

Smell as nothing to do with pot size. Smell is in the genetics. If you got a stinky pheno, you got a stinky pheno. Whether in a solo cup or in a 5 gal pot. Some stink from veg to harvest. Some dont stink at all.. Northern lights is known for its light, earthy, minty sent. I haven't heard of anyone having a stong intruding smell from their NL plants. Its nothing like a chem or og gas smell. But pot size has nothing to do with it. I wish it did.. Cause I'd get rid of this carbon filter and loud ass fan and just grow in solo cups or 1 gal pots!

Light, earthy and minty? That is definitely not the scent I am getting from my plant. More like skunk roadkill baking in the sun.

This is probably a terrible comparison for a European, but it's like firing a gun in a room vs. firing one outside at a busy rock quarry. Duh you're going to hear it in the room, but it might just blend into the background noise of an outdoor noisy area.

Your little plant in your room has a dominating aroma because it has such a small space to fill and not a lot of competition with other smells. Outside the little plant would not only be competing with all the other odors the world has to offer, but it would be getting whisked away by the breeze and dissipating over a very large area.

The secret to a good balcony grow is finding a couple of strains that don't reek to high heaven, or some that just don't smell like pot. BOG's Bogglegum is a great beginner's strain that has almost no odor. You could grow one of those on your porch without much trouble.
