Harvest & Curing Stem snap not reliable for drying?

Why does everyone say listen for the stem snap to know when your buds are dry?

I hung whole plant for 7 days, stems would bent but not snap. Buds felt dry and leaves crunchy so I jarred them up and i am sitting at 55%.

Temps were 70-75. Humidity was 48%-55% depending on time of day.

It was a small plant yielding 31 grams. The bud was not as dense as I was expecting either.

I found the same issue. I put them in jars when the buds are somewhat spongy. Then open jars and lay the buds out on newspapers until I get the desired. I do this everyday

After using that method for years, I started using some RH meters and I was pretty surprised at how bad it is for determining readiness... I have not found a reliable method to do it by feel.

What I do now is hang my whole plants in a room with a humidifier on a controller set to 60% RH. I have a 4 gallon humidifier and fill it every other day. Keep them in there 14 days, chop them into grove bags (or jars) and relative humidity in the jars will be steady 60% if you put a meter in the jar/bag.

That's the only way (IMO) to do it by the numbers. You can leave them hang in 60% for a long time (months), but they are good probably after 10 days. I leave mine for 14 just to be sure.

I never understood the “snap” deal. If I had used that as an indicator, all of my plants would have been way too dry.
