Greetings AFN forum dwellers,

Today I am going to show you step by step just how the "Fan" shaped plant is done, it would be cool to see some others doing it.

Here is what the end product should look like....well hopefully.
(Click pictures for full size)

The Preparation:
So let's get bending...A couple of pics of the selected plant and the items I will be using, try to find some tie wire that has a rubber coating over it....it does less damage to the plants.
Picture two and three show the plant before and after a haircut, normally the leaves stay ON!!! It was done so you can see the plant better.

Now it is naked and you can see the branches it should be easy to spot what is going left or right...in the picture you can see it clearly divided with a red line.

Mi5.4.jpg

As I use nice square pots that I don't want to drill holes in I have made a harness to hold the two rails on, it doesn't matter how you attach them....what matters is that you do it and make it tight. Below it a picture sequence showing the two rails being attached, note that that two lowest branches were removed as they were too short and in the way of the rails...you may need to do the same thing.

Mi5.5.jpg Mi5.6.JPG Mi5.7.jpg Mi5.8.jpg

So that's the plant set up ready for bending, you need to be very gentle when bending...you need to pull the branches down and around at the same time. Moving the branches around is the easy part it's the pulling down where things can go horribly wrong.

If you think something is going to break then STOP, just move it a little, tie it then leave it a few hours before moving it some more...rinse and repeat..
Tip: Let the plant dry out a lot as a thirsty plant is way more bendy.

The Bending:
Start by adding a tie just below the first and second nodes on the lowest branch, then starting with tie 1 drag the branch around and down as far as you dare then tie it to one of the rails. Now get the second tie and do the exact same thing but not so tight. The ties closest to the stem of the plant will generally always be the tightest ones, then the second node out etc.

I started on the right side but it doesn't matter which side you start with :)
Mi5.tie.1.jpg Mi5.tie.2.jpg

Now on to the left side, I have numbered the ties in the order they are put on the plant. Bottom branch first then the next one up. Note that tie 5 is tied to the rail and is pushing the lower branch in a bit, so it serves two purposes :)
Mi5.tie.3.jpg

Don't forget to check that everything is lining up correctly....

A couple of closer shots after doing three branches on each side.
Mi5.tie.7.jpg Mi5.tie.8.jpg

As you work your way up the plant you may notice it start to lean to one side, this will happen if the ties on one side are tighter than the other...happens to me all the time, just put a tie on to straighten it back up then continue on.
Mi5.tie.9.jpg

And done...only four branches so far but it should not be long before the fifth are ready (long enough).

So there you have it, simple huh :)
:pass:

Another "Fan" is going to happen to a Jem, I will be documenting that here also.

Greetings once again AFN forum dwellers /wave

This next fan job is harder to do than the first one as it does not use rails to tie on to, just a simple harness made from tie wire and a lot of luck :)

The Jem I have chosen for this is 12 3/4 inches tall and has nice even branches (Length) and small node spacing, with the smaller node spacing the fan will look even better. If you look closely in the third picture you can see that there is going to be six branches per side, much better :)

The Jem: (second picture is with some leaves removed and a wire harness put on)
Jem.1.JPG Jem.2.JPG

Now with the plant facing you find the lowest branch that is facing back and put some tie wire on it and pull it forward and down (tie.1), tie it to the harness.
Next turn the plant around to the back, find the branch opposite the one already tied and put wire on and pull forward and down again (tie.2).
Continue the same way up the plant until you reach the small branches, try to keep the gaps between branches the same so it looks even :)

Front and back shot with the center ties on.
Jem.7.JPG Jem.8.JPG

Now it is time to add some ties further out along the branches, starting with the bottom branch first put a tie from it to the second branch, then the third is connected to the second etc
It's pretty simple really, just hold the branches apart and gently tie them as you work your way up. You may find that you need to put a tie in the middle of some of the branches to even the gaps up.
Jem.9.1.jpg

A top down shot shows the top of the plant is not in the right position, since it only has to be twisted around a little it can be done with wire. If it had to go further I would have put multiple ties on the stem and slowly worked it around over several days.
To twist a plant use rubberized wire (thick stuff) and wrap it reasonably tightly around the stem of the plant three or four times leaving two or three inches left over, now hold the wire wraps on the stem and slowly twist in the direction you want it to go. Once it is in position use the leftover wire to tie it to a branch or two to hold it.
Jem.9.2.jpg Jem.9.3.JPG

This last picture you can see how far I twisted it, it still needs to go around some more to get it in the correct spot.
The right side has no ties on the outside like I did to the left....for that you will have to wait for the next installment :)
Jem.9.4.JPG

More to come as it happens...

I think this Jem could turn out to be a really nice fan :D
