Mesa-- this topic will have peep's scrumming over it! First, let me define a couple terms more clearly... flushing is used to describe both actual soil/medium flushing, as in copious amounts of clear water put through to help remove excess nutes, and /or help get pH back on track, and to describe the period of time where little to no actual nutrients are given, forcing the plant to finish off what's lingering in pot (if applicable), and tapping into their own stores, mainly fan leaves- (for those nutrients that are mobile within the plant; many are not!)... But in the past, an old Staff member here coined a better term for the latter, calling it a "cleanse"... part of the confusion and conflict is around the misuse of the term "flush"... One thing to note, there is no actual physical flushing of a plants internal stores, the transport of such nute's simply does not work that way, from in to out
en masse,.... Big picture, this is about forcing the plant to use up what potential reserves it has if there's an excess, as too much left unmetabolized will make for foul smoke.... Some "starving" of the plant can help speed finishing, and in general, reductions of nutes toward the end is wise because demand is dropping off fast at that point, especially for P,.... notice many "finishing" bloom nutes are K heavy, not P heavy,... K (and S) are important for terpene productions, which is still cranking during final ripening,.... For me, having run organic and synthetic, and combo's of both, I find that the fan leaves are telling you the best tale about the state of "reserves",... if the fans (even bigger sugar leaves) are well tapped, faded, that's a good sign that the internal stores are low, so no worries about excesses that foul smoke,... in such a case, I think little to no time for flushing is needed,... As a general observation, note that most nute' feed schedules are running a week at most for flush,.. With organics, or mostly organics, no time is needed at all,... I still stop feeding the last week, and let them dry out some if possible before harvesting,... pop22 does make a good point about not starving the plant for too long, especially if the fans leaves are looking tapped already, final ripening still needs certain nutes as mentioned,... In the case of fan leaves that aren't very tapped, particularly lowers (mobile nutes are tapped from there mainly, but not absolutely), and if you have been feeding heavy (for that strain, a big factor there!), it's less clear,... if you have recent tip burn, lockouts, overfeeding, then a flush is mandatory IMO,... but you still have to balance this with what the trich's are telling you about ripeness! You're juggling your nute inputs, or not, while assessing the stage of ripeness the buds are showing,... if you're at harvest point according to trich' colors, and the leaves are still looking pretty good, it's something of a risk to take the buds them, yet you don't want the buds to be past prime either!... nothing is absolute or automatic here, I do speak in general terms,... it's possible to have proper ripe, clean buds and have most of the fans in good shape, and not have gross fouling excess in the bud itself,... the opposite is true as well, I knew one grow for example, that had hammered fans, but ended up with foul bud because he overdid the molasses at the end, and had lots of lingering sugars and Mg still in there,...

.... Anyway, it's a complex subject, very conditional IMHO, and you will see adamant proponents on both side,.. and conditionally they are all right! I hope this offers some help and things to chew on further,....:smoking:
