Hi all,

Doing the water germination method. I left some tap water in the sun for 12 or so hours, then boiled the water for 15 minutes, left it to slightly cool so it was luke-warm, and then added 1 seed to it. (strain: Devon Maid Auto)

I can't see any form of root development as of yet. And it's already been 24 hours.

I know some seeds can take longer to germinate and all, but how long is the maximum i am allowed to keep the seed in the water? It sunk after 6 or so hours in the water (i had to manually tap it down), when i tried tapping it down after an hour, it wouldn't go down, but then after 6 hours, it went down with a single tap.

Anyhow, how long should i wait before transplanting, as i don't want to suffocate the seed.

I can't take any photos, but there has been no changes in the seed itself as of yet. O_O is that normal?

Thanks for all the replies, and this is my first time doing the water cup germination method.

next time dont leave it sit in the sun and dont boil it

just straight from the tap to a glass then plop in the seed , the chems will keep the seed from going slimy , the seed isnt taking in food from the water at this time so your not poisening it by following what i say , i do hundreds of seeds a month this way and have done so for years with near perfect germ rates

peace

Hey there, thanks for your reply.

I've read that there are a number of harmful toxins in the water, and boiling it & letting it sit in the sun removes all of that. Anyhow, do you know roughly how long it should take for the seed to germinate? I've had some seeds take 7 days to germinate directly from soil, and I've only ever just plopped the plant straight into the soil, never really germinated.

Thanks once again man :)

read what i said "the seed isnt taking in food from the water at this time so your not poisening it by following what i say" once you have it rooted and in your medium its a different story

every seed can be different , ive had them germ (crack their shells) in the water in under 12 hours , had others take 3 days

ive left (forgotten) seeds in water quite a few times , 5 days , a week , they didnt die and had nice long tap roots , if your worried about it drowning pour a bit more water in from a distance so it airates the water

if your still worried take it out and place it inside a damp paper towel sealed in something to keep it damp (not wet)

you can also gently and carefully crack the shell yourself between thumbnails or your teeth , notice i said "carefully"

Just a short update,

I let the seeds sit in the water for approximately 48 hours. The seed did swell up, but showed no root development, so i just mixed 70% of my highest quality soil, with 30% of my seedling starter soil (on the top) and plopped in 3mm - 5mm beneath the soil, gave it 500ml of water, and put a small humidity dome around it.

Hopefully it sprouts soon.

Chad: congrats on popping them! As HARD as it is to wait for them to pop (lol I actually stress it sometimes, your popping a $20+ raskal bean, you want it to grow!) just sit tight, don't over spray her, keep it moist, covered, and dark and LEAVE it be! Do not keep peeking ;) I know its Hard not to :) though Mother Nature won't fail you. ;) I've moved to germing straight into soil, was loosing to many beans mucking around with other methods... Sending you a big karma cloud of germination your way!

Thanks man! :-)

But I've actually just placed it inside my greenhouse, where its getting full sun? Is that okay? or should i move it away? It's about 28c (82f) inside the greenhouse at the moment, i thought the heat from the sun might be useful in speeding up sprouting. (Also, there's a large humidity down ontop of the pot)

And also: I use to sprout directly in soil, but lost a $30 seed once to it, and now I'm just going to sprout via the water method always, this method seems to work kinda!

Thanks for your reply, take care.

Has it sprouted out of the soil yet:smokebuds:, since your outside in a green house, it will be ok with sun. I grow indoors, I don't turn on lights until they show out of the soil, but that is just to save on some electricity:stylez rasta smoke: don't think it is a big deal if it is in light already, its not hurting it.:2cents: Best of luck, I hope they turn out to be monsters for you:smokeit:

long as its under soil and not still in the glass

i put my seedlings (unsprouted) into a seedling/mother/clone room thats lit 24 hours a day

peace
