New Grower What is foxtailing exactly?

Hi there. Just a quick question on foxtailing. I keep coming across this term on this forum and I have no idea what it means. I'd appreciate it if someone could explain it to me. Thank you.

Foxtailing describes buds that start to "stack" on each other, basically new buds growing out of buds. I had some going on, it can be caused by stress, heat, humidity problems etc. Not really what you want but doesn't hurt too much.

See pic below, on the top right of the top bud, it's kind of growing out....that's foxtailing.

Soo here is a few pics of one of my girls from my last photo grow....I think she foxtailed due to heat issues but I have also heard that some strains are prone to it. I can tell you that the bud was still potent as hell and had great smell and taste and if anything was more sticky then the others..did suffer in the over all yeilds but that it...hope this helps!

Good point. Foxtailing does not mean the plant is bad or that the yield is poor. The biggest auto I ever grew had a foxtailed main cola, and it was very potent. Several other plants in the same grow were fine, so it was not due to poor conditions, though that can contribute to it.

Foxtailing is mainly an issue with commercial growers who are concerned with bag appeal and want to sell nicely formed, compact nuggets of bud. But I grow for myself and everything ends up in the grinder anyway, so it doesn't bother me at all.

Foxtailing can be caused by many things and it can also be genetic as well. Sativa 's tend to be more prone genetic wise. Also too much nitrogen in flower is the most common cause of foxtailing. Not heat as most suspect.. The strains genetically breed with that trait will almost always yield more than ones forced to foxtail as well...

It happens mostly to sativa strains in my experience

That's most definitely a genetic trait for that plant. See how fat the calyces are swollen and stacked on top of each other. Plants forced to foxtail tend to have much looser developed calyces and not as symmetrically developed.
