when mixing this new perlite i got theres more of the white powder from the perlite than usual i can see it in the air when im pouring some or mixing some and alot obviosly gets mixed into the soil?

does having alot of that mixed in effect the soil in any way or no? thanks guys :peace:

I've had some before with loads of that powder and I kept it out of my soil by using a big pasta strainer. Scoop it out of the perlite bag with the strainer, shake the powder into a trash can, and then dump the big pieces in the dirt. Best done outdoors, of course. I can't imagine it does any harm by being in the soil mix, though. Some people wash their perlite which seems like a huge pain in the arse, but it's a necessity if you can only buy the kind that's been coated in time release ferts.

I always wear one of those paper masks you use for sanding etc, because breathing that perlite dust in can't be good for your lungs.

Same with the dust from peat moss. Always best to take precautions.

thanks for the help guys!

ill go ahead and get to mixing, and i feel you andy i read some people wash it but that seemed like a pain to be honest lol and i agree i need to get a mask ive been wrapping a t-shirt around my face Woops

Excellent advice! I found some information regarding perlite and health risks, taken from perlite.org :

RESULTS OF HEALTH TESTING

The perlite industry has been at the forefront of testing for health effects that may be associated with perlite and perlite products. Much of the industry research effort is sponsored by the Perlite Institute, an international trade association organized in 1949 by perlite mining and processing companies.

Perlite has been the subject of numerous health studies conducted by scientific and governmental research organizations. Significantly, no test result or information indicates that perlite poses any health risk. Indeed, the uniform result of all health studies points forcefully to the conclusion that perlite and perlite products are safe for consumer use.

Worker health studies provide direct support for the conclusion that perlite is a safe product. For example, studies by Cooper (1975; 1976), Cooper and Sargent (1986), and Weill (1990; 1994) indicate that perlite poses no significant respiratory health risk to workers. As with all workplace dusts, perlite can function as a nuisance dust, so exposure limits are set at those levels. For some workers, exposure can result in temporary physical irrigation, discomfort, impaired visibility and enhancement of accident potential. However, the most recent health study (1994) of perlite by Dr. Hans Weill of Tulane University concluded that workers exposed to perlite are free of any measurable adverse respiratory effects.

I'm not sure if this statement takes into account of chemical additives (pointed out by Andy, thanks bro,) so safety first!

I also found an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for perlite (in PDF format,) which you can find here.

:pighug:

i had noticed some dust with my last lot of perlite.so make a few slits in the bottom of the bag.sliced open the top then poured some water in,and let it drain out before use.seemed to work a treat.
