It was topped at 5th node and was growing well, 3rd week flowering. Today the stalk split! I just wrapped it with a pipe cleaner to stop it progressing. Is it fatal or will it bud out?

I suggest: Patch it up (I use cloth first aid tape; make sure to cover the wound with something breathable, stretchy and non-toxic, not just tie/wire it together) and it will almost certainly be OK. With the rather clean vertical split, actually little or even negligible damage was likely done to the living tissues in the stem -- the xylem (transport up) and phloem (transport down to roots) fluid passages. Mostly just dead woody stem tissue split. [But get other opinions].
It'll be fine but gotta bandage it up so it doesn't split again when it's putting on weight up top. Bandages, electrical tape, duck tape, hose clamp will all work. Next time leave some stem above the topping so you get a nub that'll absorb the abuse
A strip of duct tape will make it stronger. I have some silicon tape for cuts and the such. Should the need arise, I will give it a shot.
If its healthy it will survive that. Support it and before long that will be just a bunch of scar tissue.

It looks like its healthy enough to survive. Its not gonna be pretty and it will take a while to mend. Best to take some kind of tape and pull the split together.

I keep a roll of grafting tape for just such occasions. It will be fine just wrap it up with some flexible tape.
Thanks folks, I took advice and it's wrapped and taped back together. Today none of the leaves are wilted or drooping so it looks like it could be okay!
Yes it will be fine as others noted.
What no one has noted yet was that Honey is a natural antibiotic and harmless to cannabis. Great to dab on wounds to keep bacteria out while it heals.
