Xenforo to Discourse: The Path & The Plan

What I was saying to @Son of Hobbes was...go out and look at our front page...it would be intimidating to step onto site now and think I have got to learn how to navigate us...but if you put it in context...Most of us will actually be Lucky to use 3 threads on site... ...with a few basic functions to learn.

Discourse is exactly the same..Find Live Stoners.. Assembly point..then get Stoned for a week to get comfortable...and move out when you feel up to it.

I've suggested to @Son of Hobbes that we then ask the Seniors in LiveStoners...the guys who screen shot and teach already...cough..cough...

Let them go out... explore what they think will be useful.. bring it back into LS...with a tutorial every Friday night...while we sit in LS getting stoned......works for me...:yeah:.. #JustSayin
Yeah, I will have to admit that this forum is a bit 'different' in its organization.:rofl:

Automotive forums are a extremely familiar method of communications of ideas, methods and how-to's. I have been on all sides of various forums. I've been just a regular user. I have set up and got going a few forums and I have been a sponsor in multiple forums. I've had profitable forums that I've run and one that I owned. I even sold one to an advertising company, only to watch them turn It into pile of crap. If I had the same level of contacts in Cannabis as I did in the Automotive Arena, this move may not even occur or be an issue if chose to move. Money wouldn't be an issue.
I think one of the biggest problems that I've had with Discords I've tried to use in the past, as they just don't seem to be linear to me. In a forum, if you get anyone to post a reply to someone's comment, it's at the end of the thread. On the discords that I've visited that's not the case. It's just added to the post they are replying to with a little sidestep.
I've tried ! Reddit's organization just doesn't make sense to me!

While the automotive forums use differed from my current use of this forum, the basic intent is still the same of learning, informing and documentation. If I could still do those things without crazy I mean on the difficulty or complication, Then I'll probably still be a participant. I know that with use, comes familiarity and then probably a better ability to utilize what's available.

It is a shame that all the data will now fade away into nothingness. Pictures and thoughts of friends, gone and still here, will only remain as cannabis and age influenced memories. As I said before, the data is not worth that much money, but I think it's still sad to me.

On a positive note.
My Grows are only gonna get more technical from this point forward. The data that I gather will be very important to me and possibly others . I think that I need to document on my own software and keep it locally. I can then transfer it quite easily where it needs to be , but the data will be preserved . I really don't have any idea what kind of software is out there that can accomplish this . I'm very open to input !

Also ... something to consider...just because we were the first Autoflower forum in the world we've tried to hang on to as much information as we could.. History...but...if anyone tried to use that info it is totally useless...it bears no resemblance to current Autos...at all..like every museum..just collecting dust...never used...just a comfort blanket we've grown out of...

Would we not be better off looking at the movers and shakers who shape the way we grow now...and the Trends to come...get Current..cast off the shackles of the past.....?.... :pass: ....

Instead of trying to live up to past grow heroes...create new ones.... every single year...:headbang:...

New forum..new start...is a great leveller because we'll all be starting from ground Zero...anyone can stand out......:pass:

I do agree! Most of my sentiment about the info was mainly emotional.

They just never made much sense to me. :gassy1:Navigation always seem more difficult to find what I wanted.
I guess that's from using forums for 25 plus years.

I actually think the navigation on Discourse is amazing. 10x cleaner than any forum software I've seen. I mean, have you ever been to this forum before?

If I had the same level of contacts in Cannabis as I did in the Automotive Arena, this move may not even occur or be an issue if chose to move. Money wouldn't be an issue.

If you're offering pony up on the migration costs; by all means. I actually may have an investor on the migration in the works (someone that used to spend time on here,) but I don't know what they want in return.

If I had it to spare, I would.

I was just saying that I had the same level of contacts in cannabis as I did with Ford and the automotive performance industry when I was into the racing scene, we would want for little as a forum.

Naaaaaaa......................

Small Update

This weekend I am going to try a trial for a hosted solution for Discourse that is -not- by the Discourse company themselves.

The reason being: a lot of features are hidden by a large jump in price/paywall through Discourse hosted solution. If we use a managed/hosted solution, we get the full unlocked Discourse with no restrictions. I assume they do that to have more control (and it's a good money maker for the folks that run Discourse,) but some of the most interesting features of the software are the ones they make you pay for lol.

Since the Discourse forum is so new, backing it up will go incredibly fast, and I can restore that version on this test host.

To avoid CONFUSION, I probably won't give out the link on this new test; this is more to see how robust some of these features are.

FWIW, I don't care about my old data. Most of it is outdated anyway now that you guys and gals have trained me better. :)

A new start over there would work fine for me, hey maybe even a fresh handle eh?

I had a trip meself...you know how technophobic I am...no sugar coating...it didn't feel like home..but you know..We are the Home...we are the heart.
Once we get over there it will feel like home... it's US that makes that feeling.

In two minutes I'd found out how to post GIFs..photos...music ...and that is the functions I use the most......2 minutes.

Getting comfortable in LS...a bit..I looked at what @Son of Hobbes was saying about the site index being on the left side of the screen...and yeah... he's right... that'll make site navigation a lot easier...once we get used to it...:pass:..

Once we all move..it will feel like home.. because we are there...:headbang:...

The smilies are shite...there wasn't even a smoker...:pass:...so I was gonna ask @Son of Hobbes if it might be worth saving our most popular ones to see if it will be possible to copy them over...?...

It's super easy to upload new smilies, but let's not bring over a bunch of low resolution graphics and broken animations if we can avoid it. I am 100% game to add new, updated stoner graphics.
