Cultivar

Bobby's Widow F3 Autoflower (Regular)

Setup/Medium
4x4x8 tent
HLG 650R
Earthbox Jr (Sub-Irrigated Planter)
Living Soil
EM-1, Gro Kashi, Build a Soil Compost, Coconut water, Recharge

I lost a couple of seedlings, and had just gotten the Bobby's Widow which is a fast finisher (53-65 days, 57-60 average), so in the tent she (hopefully) goes.

Seed soak, 24ish hours - spring water + hydrogen peroxide in a shot glass on heating pad

I tried a hybrid planting method this time by direct planting not in the soil, but in a peat pod that I then planted. Basically just gave the seed a pocket of fast drying material in case the soil was too saturated. I had damping off issues in the last earthbox attempt, I thought this might protect the seedling a bit by allowing it to dry faster than soil. This also worked better to hold the Mykos (mycorrhizal innoculant) and get the tap root in direct contact immediately.

Both Bobby's Widow seeds cracked easily during soak and had exposed tap roots when planted. Both emerged from soil after 18-24 hours.

I've listened to @FullDuplex on a few podcasts and he encouraged planting more than one in a single container. Maybe an earthbox jr is pushing it if both turn out female, guess I'll find out - it's for science!

May be able to determine sex at the end of the week, supposed to be 12-14 days and today is day 10.

A new wrinkle.(for me) Why would anyone make or want male autoflowers?

I'm sure there is a genetic reason, but I'm a relative newb and that's a question for a breeder. I guess if you have a photo female you want to make an auto you'd cross it with an auto male. Just a guess.

Night Owl released a handful of regular seeds this past summer, but it's definitely rare in the auto world.

On a podcast this week it was announced a feminized version of Bobby's Widow is coming. So there's that.

I've seen some "breeders pacs" sold that are regulars.
Will be interesting to see how 2 girls in a jr works out. My diy jr's are solidly packed with roots to the point I put the soil in worm bin to break it down instead of reusing it. Pops out of the box like a brick.

Damn these earthboxes!

For whatever reason I was able to get a decent feel for the gro bucket SIPs and successfully start them the first time out, but now for the second time I've run into damping off in the earthboxes. I thought I was extra careful but I must have started using the reservoir too soon again. If I try EB again I'll wait until I think it's going to die before I water. Ugh.

Might be able to save one, but I've lost one. Next 24-48 hours will tell.

I had heard that you should just fill the jr's with half the amount of water for the first week or 2. I've been doing that with my small diy boxes and seems to work. I think when you use full amount the soil is too wet for seedlings

I thought I was being extra careful and didn't use the reservoir at all for 8-9 days. The soil was super dry on top so I thought I needed to start, but clearly I jumped the gun and filled it too full. One is hanging tough, hopefully it survives and isn't male.

I usually water from the top with half of what I'm going to put in the reservoir to jump start the wicking effect. and let it sit for a few days before putting my seed in- I direct plant. Do you use any yucca or other wetting agent with your water? It helps even out the watering so you don't get any dry or over wet spots

Yes, I'm using Therm X-70.

Definitely don't have any dry spots in the EB now, ha ha.

What height and power level are you running the 650r? Having trouble w light burn running autos with mine.

I was running it at 40-48" and 50% (in a 4x4x8), which was way too much light.

I was running 24/0 and m plants couldn't take that much light for 24 hours a day.

I estimate my DLI was at 50 where 30-40 is generally the highest you want to go.

So I'm running 20/4 in the current grow and keeping my DLI below 40.

I want an apogee quantum par meter but can't really justify the cost. So I'm using a lux meter and converting to PPFD and DLI using HLG's tools. Also have a iOS app called Korona to cross-reference to see if I'm in the right range.
