This is a great question. In fact, it is one i have put to test before on a photo strain. about 5 years ago, me and my growing partner, we'll call him Tom, decided to see what would happen if we adjusted for DLI. We too came to the conclusion that 8 hours was more than enough light for the plant, and that a 4 hour sleep period would allow the plant to wind down long enough to start another 8 hour run of the lights. As soon as it was time for flower, we started the regiment, and where hoping that it would speed up the process, and in fact it did. but only for the first week. the plant started in beautiful flower mode, and growth was quite vigorous. but suddenly, the plants started acting strange, and started producing male flowers as well, not at the top of the plants, but at the inner nodes down below the plants.
Since cannabis is a natural survivor it had gone into survival mode, and was trying to pollinate itself. the amount of stress we where causing, was too much for the plant to handle.
We tried the experiment 6 or 7 different ways, including bringing the lights on slow, and as the day went on brighter, and then less light at the end of the 8 hours. No matter what we did, the the plant couldn't handle the stress.
We tried several strains, and aeveral methods, and they all produced Hermies. including the purer genetic strains that we tried.
Sometimes what looks good on paper, isnt always good in practice. This was one of those things.
I did take a few things from these experiments, one of them being my lighting method. Not a complete waste of time, we also gave the tainted strains to a family member, and let him enjoy the fruits of our failed labors.
Me and Tom, decided to stick to the methods we knew worked, and haven't looked back since. This is really a case of "If it ain't broke, Don't fix it."
Excellent question, excellent question indeed.......
