I'm not sure how your saved items disappeared, but there may be a few factors that might be involved.

First of all, I believe that when you say basket(since you're in the UK), and I'm going to assume cart (in the U.S.).

Did you have all the saved items on your girlfriend's account? Or do you have your own account, that may be saved under there?
Were you using a different computer when you saved those items?
Were you in Incognito Mode - Chrome / Private Browsing - Firefox & Internet Explorer & Safari?
If you were in private mode, those information in your basket will not be saved for future uses.

Did you, your girlfriend, or somebody else come by and perform a system cleanup (it contains your cookies, cache, history, passwords, and temporary files to be deleted)?

The basket / cart is actually a temporary storage (correct me if I'm wrong), and the items to have a time period before they disappear.

I'm not used to eBay, but do they have a another storage for saved items like a wishlist? Where you can store your items for later without the concern of thinking the items may be lost.
