Hello everybody!

First, may I say a very cool, insightful forum, full of knowledge, which I'll no doubt be tapping into over the coming months. I found my way here through the equally cool site, Dutch Passion.

I've smoked cannabis on and off in all its various guises since the age of 17. Now, at 38, I think it's safe to say it's been, and continues to be, a positive and faithful companion in my life. However, getting hold of it these days is not easy. I don't have the acquaintances I used to have, and rely on my bro to get it when he can, which isn't often enough for my liking. I want to become completely self-sufficient and grow my own, hence my reason for joining the forum. :)

I've done a lot of reading up on the subject of growing your own the past couple of weeks, and probably have the same old questions and concerns that most of you have no doubt heard before. I will do my best to scour the various boards for answers before asking any questions to save you having to repeat yourselves and clogging up the forum.
My intention is to grow indoors in my own home, initially as a one-off to see how it goes, but strictly for my own consumption and that of my bro. I don’t envisage having more than one plant on the go at any one time. Therefore, I want to do this as cheaply as I can, at least for this first attempt and buy only the equipment that is essential, rather than nice to have. As much as I’d like the whole kit and caboodle (and believe me I would!), I just can’t justify it right now.

Living in a small 2 bedroom semi, my choice of grow room is limited to either the spare room or the attic. My choice of seeds will be the dutch passion autofem ultimate strain. J Any advice or words of wisdom as I embark on my first foray into growing my own will be very gratefully received. I must say I’m looking forward to it. :D

Thanks for reading. Peace :peace:

Welcome, smithers! Great introduction :) If I can be of any assistance, please let me know!
Where I live, the attic is always either scorching hot or blistering cold lolol.. I post my vote for considering a spare room for the grow. Look forward to your first journal!
Best to you :Sharing One:

Thanks Waximus. My attic is the same. The pros are that it's more concealed up there, and I could duct the smell directly out the roof. But as you say, it would be hard to maintain the right environment up there. Spare room it is. It's fortunate I live on my own! lol

Welcome to the forum smithers, nice to meet you, I'm sure you'll love it here. :pighug:
I was in the exact same place you were a couple of months ago (thinking of a setup to become self-sufficient and grow some for myself only) and now here I am with my harvest happily curing away, partially thanks to AFN :)
Looking forward to your adventures and wish you the very best of luck! (also great choice on the strain - won't disappoint you)

:goodluck:

Good evening smithers :tiphat: I like your thinking and motivation! All the best (you`ll get a lot of sound advice here from some good folks!) and I look forward (hopefully) t`seeing updates of `OPERATION...SELF-PRESERVATION`! :goodluck: ...:Sharing One:

Cheers all! Yeah the auto ultimate seemed a no-brainer. Straight to the good stuff no mucking about! lol Although I'm sure they're all good. I'm amazed at what's achievable now with all these strains, all with very specific characteristics. It's nice to know exactly what you're getting. It's pot luck what I end up with at the mo. My bro gets it from his mate, who gets it from his mate. I bet most links in the chain haven't a clue what the next lot will be like, it's origin, where it was grown etc. I can see why growing your own has gained so much popularity.

While noseying around the new growers forum, I'm seeing the term 'nutes' quite a bit. What does that mean?

I've also seen an impressive, detailed grow schedule from a user known as TaNg. It's not surprising he achieves amazing results! I intend to use the soil he suggests, Plagron light mix. However, I costed up all the nutrients he uses and it was considerable. The most prominently used seem to be the Sensi Grow/Bloom A/B. Could I get away with using just these?

Nutes is short for nutrients :) And, TaNg's schedule is an alpha/omega unto itself! I'm sure you can grow with just the base nutes. Most growers have their own subset of the AN nutes that they believe in. I know I appreciated some of their additives- Big Bud, Bud Factor X, B-52, Bud Candy- when I was using them previously. AN has bundle packages of additive for a reasonable price, too :)

Hey smithers, check out my grow. https://www.autoflower.org/f44/first-grow-looking-some-help-along-way-37404.html First off, my humble opinion is if you can go with 2 plants. The two things I will focus on my second grow will be getting my soil Ph right before I plant and not wasting money trying to "cheap" my lighting system. If you can go HPS and MH, it is tried and true but heat is a major issue in small spaces. There are lots of options and price ranges out there for leds and that is what I ultimately went with and I am happy. Also, don't under estimate the odor issue if you are worried about stealth. A carbon filter/fan combo is well worth the $.
