Just throwing an idea out here, as its your first grow have you considered coco bark ? The single biggest killer of plants by first time growers is overwatering and it is virtually impossible to overwater a plant in coco. Im in the UK too, dont waste time and money at garden centres, they dont cater to us. There are plenty of online shops supplying everything you need and most industrial estates have specialist grow shops. Look under hydroponics in your Thompsons Local, Cannabis is unique, normal soils and fertilisers arent suitable.
In case I missed other answers, you need two lights for the grow, one high in blue spectum for vegetative growth and one high in red spectrum for flowering, or cut the confusion and just get an LED, as Blue says, they are the mutts nuts mate.
Some people like to start in small pots and transplant but its not necessary, I start in the big pot it shall spend its entire grow in, its just personal preference, you will come across many ambiguities like that on this forum, the best light schedule, the best feed, the best strain etc, its all down to what people prefer.
Youre already on the right track by wanting to keep it simple, thats the key. Good grow mate and welcome to the AFN family.
