atrain's going organic!!! prep and grow journal.....empty compost bins to buds in a jar..... lets go

Nice thread and worm bin brotha. Start eating lots of shrimp.

"Shrimp shells contain bacteria that help them decompose, and they are made largely of chitin, which forms the exoskeleton and contains large amounts of nitrogen. Nitrogen is a primary nutrient that plants need for growth. Canadian researchers found that compost containing chitin-digesting bacteria protected potato crops against several fungal diseases. You can eliminate the odor of decomposing shrimp by boiling, drying and crushing the shells before adding them to the compost."

I just loaded up on shrimp compost, store bought tho.

We eat it a good bit I been tossing them in the outside compost bin but I think ill start drying crunching and feeding to the lil guys

Well the worm bin is going well... they are eating and pooping just like they are supposed to. They did however have to be moved out back due to a few escapees and the wife tripping out. The bin does however have a few more bugs in it I have no idea what they are if anyone else does please let me know.... I dont know if they are harmful but if not the more the better I guess lol.

Also after checking on the compost today and turning it over I find its still not heating up... I started it with 30:1 green yard weeds to autumn leaves but it doesnt seem to be where it needs to yet so I am going to add more autumn leaves along with a 5 gal bucket of fresh cow manure and give it a good stir and see where she goes from there..... stay tuned guys and all input is welcome and appreciated

Ok due to not heating with compost I made a few modifications... I opened it up a little for more air flow to center as well as double the size. Ill be adding a load of cow and horse manure tom. And just to add a side note I will not be using water from a hose or tap for anything. The pile is staying moist with rain water for now when summer hits ill be using pond or well water. May not make a huge dif but dont want to take a chance of chlorine killing any of the microorganisms

Good to see you here elsamurai you were a great help on my last journal and you are right its a long way from MG lol
